Two of the most commonly available coffees from Papua New Guinea in the domestic market are Sigri and Purosa. Many people are accustomed to calling Sigri "Bird of Paradise," while referring to Purosa as "Purosa." In reality, these are two types of beans produced by two different estates. As for the name "Bird of Paradise," it's somewhat inappropriate because the bird of paradise is actually Papua New Guinea's national bird, which appears on their national flag. Since Sigri's green bean bags are also printed with a bird of paradise, it's easy for domestic consumers to make assumptions and call this bean "Bird of Paradise."

Purosa, which entered the domestic market later than Sigri, actually also has a "bird of paradise" printed on its bags. However, since the name "Bird of Paradise" was already taken, Purosa became known as "Purosa."

PNG's Sigri AA green beans are large and round, with a very beautiful appearance.

The roasting effect at the beginning of second crack is excellent, with most beans expanded and very full. When consumed immediately after roasting, although it's not at its optimal drinking period, the taste is still quite clean with only faint off-flavors, which might be caused by gases not yet released from freshly roasted beans. However, the overall balance is good, with smooth mouthfeel and persistent aftertaste.

  • Solis 166 at coarsest setting

FrontStreet Coffee's Papua New Guinea (PNG) Bird of Paradise Sigri Coffee Flavor:

Rich fruit acidity aroma with faint jasmine fragrance, smooth mouthfeel, very clean taste in the mouth with no excessive flavors, and exceptionally persistent lingering aroma after swallowing.

Final Note:

It seems there are rumors that Sigri from Taiwan has been exclusively acquired by a certain company, so various suppliers appear to have no restock. Later "Bird of Paradise" coffees seem to all be Purosa.
