Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee's Sumatra Mandheling Coffee
Mandheling coffee is considered one of the richest coffees in the world. When tasting Mandheling, you can feel a distinct smoothness on your tongue. It also has lower acidity, but this acidity is clearly noticeable. The jumping slight acidity mixed with the richest aroma allows you to easily experience the lively factors within gentle richness. In addition, this coffee also has a faint earthy aroma, which some describe as the fragrance of herbal plants. The most famous origin of Asian coffee among the Mandheling varieties are the various islands of the Malay Archipelago: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan.
Among these, the Sumatra Mandheling coffee produced on Sumatra Island in Indonesia is the most renowned. It has two famous varieties: Sumatra Mandheling DP Grade 1 and Classic Sumatra Mandheling. Sumatra Mandheling DP Grade 1 has a long aftertaste with a wild fragrance that is the unique earthy aroma of primitive forests. In fact, the richness of Mandheling is a very masculine feeling. High-quality Grade 1 Mandheling coffee has very light acidity, like the slight acidity of flowers and fruits. Besides the unique richness characteristic of Indonesian coffee, it also has a taste that is sweet within bitterness, deeply loved by people who enjoy dark roasted coffee; Classic Sumatra Mandheling coffee is called "Classic" because it is stored in cellars for three years before export.
But classic coffee is definitely not stale coffee, but rather slightly pale coffee that has undergone special processing. This type of coffee is richer, with reduced acidity but increased body, and the aftertaste becomes more lingering. It also carries strong spice flavors, sometimes tart and sometimes walnut or chocolate flavors. Before Blue Mountain coffee was discovered, Mandheling was once considered the finest among coffees. A very interesting point is that although Indonesia produces the world's most mellow coffees, Indonesians prefer Turkish-style coffee.
Today, Indonesia is the world's fourth-largest coffee producer by production volume. The most famous representatives of Indonesian coffee are naturally the Sumatra (civet cat) civet coffee and Mandheling! There are also coffees from Java and Sulawesi islands, mainly Robusta varieties accounting for 90% of total production. However, Sumatra Mandheling is a rare Arabica variety, with "Mandheling" produced on Sumatra Island being the most famous.
Mandheling coffee is produced in Sumatra, Asia, Indonesia, and is also known as "Sumatra Coffee." Mandheling does not specifically refer to a coffee bean variety, nor is it the name of an origin, etc. The name Mandheling comes from the phonetic translation of the Indonesian Mandheling ethnic group.
Indonesian coffee is very diverse in quality, but the Mandheling we usually refer to is Typica or its variant coffee beans grown in the mountainous areas around Lake Toba. Coffee connoisseurs from around the world have commented: "Sumatra Mandheling coffee is the coffee with the best texture in the world." Mandheling coffee beans are relatively large, with hard bean texture. Due to numerous defects, they require strict selection during coffee processing.
Mandheling coffee is an indispensable variety for blending mixed coffees. The coffee flavor is rich, with fragrance, pure bitterness, and richness, carrying a slight sweetness and mild acidity.
