Yunnan's Four Major Coffee Growing Regions

Let's explore Yunnan's four major coffee growing areas together!

Yunnan Coffee Growing Main Areas

Yunnan Province is located in the "golden coffee growing belt" between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Due to its natural conditions of low latitude, high altitude, and significant temperature differences between day and night, coffee thrives in this land. The Yunnan small-grain coffee produced here is of high quality and widely recognized by the global coffee community. Currently, in the southern and western parts of Yunnan, including Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, Wenshan, Baoshan, Dehong, and Lincang, these areas are distribution regions for Yunnan small-grain coffee cultivation.

Dehong

Dehong is the main production area for Hougu Coffee.

Dehong Prefecture's coffee history spans over a century, making it one of the earliest regions in China to introduce coffee cultivation. As early as 1914, small-grain coffee was introduced from Myanmar for sporadic cultivation. After successfully experimenting with 6 mu (approximately 1 acre) of coffee in 1953, commercial cultivation began. It has successfully registered the geographical indication "Dehong Coffee" and was awarded the honorary title of "China's Coffee Town."

Currently, the total coffee cultivation area in the prefecture has reached 275,800 mu, with 140,000 mu in production, yielding 28,000 tons of dry coffee beans, achieving an agricultural output value of 616 million yuan and an industrial output value of 800 million yuan. Additionally, Dehong is also the main production area for Hougu Coffee, the only national-level agricultural industrialization leading enterprise in the coffee industry.

All coffee cultivation areas in Dehong Prefecture are situated above 1,000 meters in altitude, with 30,000 mu planted on mountainous areas above 1,600 meters. Combined with the primary use of organic fertilizers and organic pesticides in coffee cultivation in Dehong Prefecture, the produced coffee is of excellent quality, making it one of the world's rare premium coffee-producing regions.

Lincang - Yunnan Premium Coffee

Lincang serves as a high-quality coffee seedling base.

The unique geographical location and climate conditions have made Lincang a focus of attention for numerous coffee enterprises. High-quality coffee seedling bases of 200 mu and 100 mu have been established respectively in Mengding Town, Gengma Autonomous County, and Xingfu Farm in Lincang City. Coffee cultivation has been carried out in areas such as Gengma, Zhenkang, Yun County, Cangyuan, and Yongde. As of now, Lincang City has built 96 coffee nursery gardens covering 1,570 mu, cultivating 67.19 million coffee seedlings capable of planting 203,000 mu, with 260,000 mu of coffee cultivation area confirmed.

Baoshan - Yunnan Premium Coffee

Baoshan is known for its Lujiangba small-grain coffee.

Coffee cultivation in Baoshan began in the mid-1950s, with the first coffee seedling introduced from Southeast Asia by the late patriotic overseas Chinese Mr. Liang Jinshan. The locally famous Lujiangba small-grain coffee is of high quality and was rated as first-grade in London, England as early as the late 1950s.

In recent years, with the expansion of international trade, Lujiangba's small-grain coffee has become even more renowned. European, American, and Arab countries, especially merchants from Britain, the United States, Egypt, Hong Kong, and Macau, regard it as premium coffee, with products in short supply. In December 2010, after review by the China National Quality Inspection Administration, it was decided to implement national geographical indication product protection for "Baoshan Small-Grain Coffee."

Pu'er - Yunnan Premium Coffee

Pu'er has a century-old coffee cultivation history.

The tea town of Pu'er has a century-old history of coffee cultivation. In the early 1990s, Pu'er City began to develop coffee as a key advantageous industry for adjusting industrial structure and increasing farmers' income and wealth. In Pu'er City's 9 counties and 1 district, 54 townships cultivate coffee. Pu'er also plans to expand its coffee forests.

Of course, Yunnan's coffee cultivation industry continues to expand. Coffee growing areas represented by Dehong, known as "China's Coffee Town," are preparing to expand their cultivation scale.
