Yunnan's Main Coffee-Growing Areas

Yunnan Province sits in the "golden coffee belt" between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Dehong is the main production area for Hougu Coffee.

Dehong Prefecture's coffee history spans over a century, making it one of the earliest regions in China to cultivate coffee. As early as 1914, small-bean coffee was introduced from Myanmar for sporadic planting. After a successful trial of 6 mu (roughly 1 acre) of coffee in 1953, commercial cultivation began. Dehong has registered the geographical indication "Dehong Coffee" and was awarded the honorary title of "China's Coffee Town."

Today the prefecture's total coffee cultivation area has reached 275,800 mu, with 140,000 mu in production, yielding 28,000 tons of dry coffee beans - an agricultural output value of 616 million yuan and an industrial output value of 800 million yuan. Dehong is also the home base of Hougu Coffee, the only national-level agricultural industrialization leading enterprise in the coffee industry.

All of Dehong's coffee-growing areas sit above 1,000 meters in altitude, with 30,000 mu planted on mountains above 1,600 meters. Combined with the prefecture's primary reliance on organic fertilizers and organic pesticides, the coffee produced here is of excellent quality - one of the world's rare premium coffee-producing regions.

Lincang - Yunnan Premium Coffee

Lincang serves as a high-quality coffee seedling base.

Its unique geography and climate have made Lincang a magnet for coffee enterprises. High-quality seedling bases of 200 mu and 100 mu have been established in Mengding Town of Gengma Autonomous County and at Xingfu Farm in Lincang City, with cultivation carried out in Gengma, Zhenkang, Yun County, Cangyuan, and Yongde. To date, Lincang City has built 96 coffee nurseries covering 1,570 mu, raising 67.19 million seedlings capable of planting 203,000 mu, with 260,000 mu of cultivation area confirmed.

Baoshan - Yunnan Premium Coffee

Baoshan is known for its Lujiangba small-bean coffee.

Coffee cultivation in Baoshan began in the mid-1950s, started from seedlings introduced from Southeast Asia by the late patriotic overseas Chinese Mr. Liang Jinshan. The locally famous Lujiangba small-bean coffee is of such high quality that it was rated first-grade in London, England as early as the late 1950s.

In recent years, with the expansion of international trade, Lujiangba small-bean coffee has grown even more renowned. European, American, and Arab buyers - especially merchants from Britain, the United States, Egypt, Hong Kong, and Macau - regard it as premium coffee, and supply runs short. In December 2010, after review by China's national quality inspection authorities, "Baoshan Small-Bean Coffee" was granted national geographical indication product protection.

Pu'er - Yunnan Premium Coffee

Pu'er has a century-old coffee cultivation history.

The famous tea town of Pu'er has likewise grown coffee for a century. In the early 1990s, Pu'er City began developing coffee as a key advantageous industry to restructure the local economy and raise farmers' incomes. Coffee is cultivated in 54 townships across the city's 9 counties and 1 district, and Pu'er plans to keep expanding its coffee forests.
