Introduction

Coffee as a daily beverage has deeply integrated into many people's lives. At the same time, for many, coffee is no longer just about caffeine supplementation—the delightful regional flavors of coffee are also why people love it. Different regions offer different tastes: Yirgacheffe's citrus floral notes, Panama Geisha's tea-like characteristics, washed Colombian's citrus and dark cocoa, and Mandheling coffee's herbal spices.

As coffee has become more popular, it has increasingly become part of daily life. However, there are many times when we cannot visit a coffee shop to enjoy a good cup of coffee. That's why FrontStreet Coffee also highly recommends everyone brew pour-over coffee at home to enjoy the pleasure of coffee brewing. However, today we're introducing another method that's even more convenient and quicker than pour-over coffee—drip bag coffee.

What is Drip Bag Coffee?

The drip bag coffee we commonly buy and see is a coffee bag shaped like a filter bag. Taking FrontStreet Coffee's drip bags as an example, coffee beans are ground and then sealed into specialized filter bags, with final sealing treatment. The name "drip bag coffee" comes from the two support tabs that hang over the coffee cup when the filter bag is opened, resembling two ears hanging on the cup.

The characteristic of drip bag coffee is that it's quicker and more convenient compared to pour-over coffee. Pour-over coffee preparation requires equipment including a pouring kettle, thermometer, filter cup, filter paper, and coffee grinder. However, drip bag coffee is already ground, so no grinder is needed, and the filter bag design eliminates the need for filter cups and paper, as the unique filter bag already serves the function of both.

Because it's more convenient than pour-over coffee and offers different flavor options, drip bag coffee is often used for business trips and travel. So how should you brew drip bag coffee?

How to Brew Drip Bag Coffee?

Brewing drip bag coffee is very simple and doesn't require preparing too many things like pour-over coffee. You only need one drip bag coffee, hot water, and a cup.

Tearing drip bag 639

First, tear open the outer packaging of the drip bag and take out the coffee filter bag inside.

Then tear along the indicated line on the coffee filter bag to open and spread out the drip bag coffee. Subsequently, hang the two "ears" of the drip bag coffee on the cup or pot rim.

FrontStreet Coffee's drip bags contain 10 grams of coffee each, with a recommended brewing ratio of 1:15. First, pour a small amount of hot water for the first segment, ensuring all coffee grounds are moistened. Let it bloom for 10 to 20 seconds. For the second segment, pour water until nearly full, allowing the coffee liquid to drip down. Finally, pour a third segment of water until full. With these three pouring segments total, wait for the remaining coffee liquid to filter through before enjoying.

How Many Times Can Drip Bag Coffee Be Brewed?

FrontStreet Coffee believes that drip bag coffee is similar to a simplified version of pour-over coffee. Like pour-over coffee, drip bag coffee can only be brewed once, and you must control the ratio. If the ratio is too high (too much water injected), it will result in a weak coffee flavor. Why? Because the extractable substances from coffee beans only account for about 30% of the coffee bean's weight, so even if you inject more water, it won't make the coffee taste better.

Also pay attention to the ratio. Like pour-over coffee, the recommended ratio is between 1:14 to 1:18. For drip bag coffee, the ratio is exactly the amount of water for the bloom segment plus two full segments of water—that is, three water segments total. Another method is to find a cup with a capacity of 200 milliliters and fill it to 80% full.

How to Choose Drip Bag Flavors?

As specialty coffee development matures, we have many different choices when buying drip bags. So when faced with dazzling products and unfamiliar origin variety introductions, how do you pick your favorite? Next, FrontStreet Coffee will teach you how to quickly identify.

For friends who like floral and fruity acidic coffee, FrontStreet Coffee would first recommend drip bags made from beans from African countries like Ethiopia and Kenya, because they usually present pleasant bright fruit acidity and elegant floral notes in light to medium roast levels. Take Ethiopian coffee for example—FrontStreet Coffee's favorite is from the classic Yirgacheffe region: FrontStreet Coffee's washed Gedeb. The brewed black coffee is not only fresh and natural but also has a slight caramel sweetness and green tea aftertaste, with particularly distinct layers.

For customers who prefer rich, full-bodied coffee, FrontStreet Coffee would immediately recommend two regions of specialty coffee: one is FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Queen Estate Yellow Bourbon, and the other is FrontStreet Coffee's PWN Gold Mandheling from Indonesia's Sumatra island. After dark roasting, both exhibit moderate bitterness and rich caramelized aromas, releasing notes of chocolate, roasted nuts, and cocoa from the first sip, leaving you feeling refreshed.

Besides acidity and bitterness, coffee's unique aroma is also one of its greatest charms, which has left a deep impression on many friends. For example, in the Colombia region classification on FrontStreet Coffee's bean list, including FrontStreet Coffee's Colombia Sidra, FrontStreet Coffee's Colombia Maragogipe, FrontStreet Coffee's Colombia Rose Valley, and FrontStreet Coffee's Colombia Moonlight Night, have all become popular choices due to their rich and distinctive flavors. Like Colombia's FrontStreet Coffee Rose Valley, which uses medium roast, the brewed drip bag coffee not only has full peach aroma but also becomes more fruitily acidic as the temperature drops, tasting like a fruit wine made with strawberries.
