Buku Drying Station and DW Company
The Buku drying station, managed by DW company, is located in the village of Buku, 400 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. This location is established at an altitude of 2000 meters and consists of dense vegetation mixed with various trees, coffee plants, and shrubs. Enset, commonly known as false banana, is a typical tree species in southern Ethiopia. Its roots are collected, dried, and crushed into flour, forming the foundation of local food. The nutritional value of enset has long been recognized by people in southern Ethiopia. Additionally, this tree possesses the characteristic of retaining moisture in its trunk, which can be used to wet the surrounding soil during dry seasons. This is why mixing coffee trees with enset makes sense.
DW company collects high-quality cherries in this fertile environment; the cherries are sun-dried at the Buku station to provide this natural Guji coffee.
Buku is both the name of the village and the river that flows through these hills. The intensity of the vegetation's green creates a stark contrast with the red volcanic soil.
The region features volcanic soil, rainfall from May to October, and a semi-forest planting system.
DW Coffee Company's Commitment to Quality
DW Coffee Export company has been in the coffee industry for over 20 years, particularly excelling in the Guji region, where manager Demissie Edema originates. DW serves as both producer and exporter. DW owns farms in the Guji production area and operates several washing and drying stations in the Hambela district. Recognizing the potential of coffee produced in this region, DW members have dedicated their efforts to improving coffee quality here. In addition to coffee harvested from their farms, DW collaborates with smallholder farmers, collecting high-quality coffee beans from them to complete these batches. To support these producers, DW provides technical assistance and financial support, particularly paying above-market prices for coffee beans to maintain optimal quality.
To ensure proper cherry traceability, DW ensures preparation at different stations. They balance the quantity of coffee beans to achieve uniform drying and optimal quality.
The precision of the team at different work levels guarantees the quality of these coffees. In recent years, several of DW's coffees have won awards in competitions throughout Ethiopia and Africa.

Different soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties contribute to the distinct differences and characteristics of coffee produced in each area. The natural processed coffee beans from the Buku Abel in the Hambela region won the natural processing category championship in Ethiopia's 2017 competition, and that year the bean was named "Flower Champion." The Hambela cluster is located in Guji, and currently, Hambela has nearly 20 processing plants. Among all estates and processing plants, only coffee from the Goro mountain spring processing plant, at altitudes above 2280 meters, with cherry sugar content reaching 21 or higher, can undergo natural processing.
