Kenya is located in eastern Africa, with the equator crossing through its central part and the East African Rift Valley running from north to south. The territory lies in the tropical monsoon zone, but due to its high elevation, it experiences a tropical savanna climate with significant seasonal precipitation variations.

African Coffee: Kenya Coffee Growing Regions

First, let's quickly get to know Kenyan coffee. Kenya is located in East Africa, connected to Ethiopia. Kenya has low latitude and is crossed by the Great Rift Valley. Coffee was only introduced to Kenya by the British in the late 19th century. Most Kenyan coffee grows at altitudes of around 1500-2100 meters, with two harvests per year.

The region is located in the tropical monsoon zone, but due to its high terrain, it has a tropical savanna climate with significant seasonal precipitation differences. Influenced by the monsoon climate, coffee can be harvested twice throughout the year. Because mountain temperatures are lower, growth is slower, allowing the aromatic components of coffee beans to fully develop, resulting in more prominent fruit acidity and harder texture. This fertile, crescent-shaped coffee specialty zone is the main production area for Kenya's premium beans.

Premium coffee growing regions mainly come from the following counties: Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and Murang'a. Additionally, Embu and Laikipia are also relatively common.

As can be seen from the map, the renowned growing regions are all located around Mount Kenya, with seven regions being the most famous, including Nyeri, Thika, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, and the west side of Mount Kenya.

Today, let's focus on understanding three of these growing regions: Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and Murang'a.

Kirinyaga

Kirinyaga is another name for Mount Kenya. Mount Kenya is Africa's second highest peak. Kirinyaga comes from the Kikuyu people, meaning "white mountains," and is considered the dwelling place of gods.

Murang'a

Let's now look at Murang'a. Kenya's Murang'a County is located in central Kenya, with coffee beans grown at altitudes between 1750-1950 meters. This batch of selected smallholder farms produces coffee as the main economic crop for most people.

Nyeri

Nyeri has historically been a classic coffee growing region in Kenya, relying on Mount Kenya and possessing an excellent environment suitable for coffee cultivation.

The Kenya beans from FrontStreet Coffee are produced at the Sasini Estate in Kiambu, at an altitude of 1500-2000 meters, with abundant sunshine and fertile soil.
