As coffee enthusiasts, we should not only know how to brew and roast coffee, but also understand how to select premium coffee and learn about renowned coffee origins and their flavors.
Several conditions are required for an environment suitable for growing coffee trees. Coffee-producing regions are mainly concentrated between 25 degrees south and 25 degrees north latitude, known as the coffee belt - tropical and subtropical regions. Areas with an average annual rainfall of 1500 to 2000 millimeters and an average temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius provide ideal conditions for growing coffee trees.
The world's best coffee origins are located within these coffee belts. How much do you know about coffee-producing regions with distinctive characteristics? FrontStreet Coffee has listed the following representative regions:
Brazil
Hailed as the "giant" of the coffee world, Brazil is the largest coffee-producing country, accounting for one-third of the world's production. For Brazil, the most challenging aspect is frequent natural disasters, but this is well compensated by its vast planting area. In terms of coffee grades, due to Brazil's simple and straightforward industrial policies, there may be only a few truly premium coffees. However, Brazilian coffee is often an excellent choice for blended coffee.
Ethiopia
There are two legends about the origin of coffee beans, one of which traces back to Ethiopia. Ethiopia maintains the tradition of harvesting wild coffee beans using relatively primitive methods. Combined with the nurturing environment of high altitudes and Ethiopia's washed coffee processing method, its coffee features smooth and gentle flavors with complex and rich fruit aromas, particularly prominent chocolate notes. The wild and natural environment has forged the wild character of Ethiopian coffee. However, due to limitations in cultivation and harvesting methods, production is relatively low. Well-known examples include Yirgacheffe. Take time to savor its flavors - encountering good coffee is a wonderful experience. Even non-coffee drinkers will fall in love with just one cup.
Colombia
As the world's third-largest coffee-producing country, Colombia deserves special mention for its mild climate and beautiful mountains, which have created a "natural pasture" where harvest season occurs year-round. Its coffee beans offer rich flavors with an endless aftertaste. Therefore, it's no wonder that people often associate "Colombia" with "high quality," as Colombia's top premium varieties are truly captivating.
Guatemala
Distinctive carbon-roasted flavor, cocoa aroma, and rich, moderately strong acidity are the hallmarks of Guatemalan coffee. In its mellow yet slightly wild taste, there's a noticeable sweet aftertaste, making it one of the most irresistible specialty coffees. It constantly reminds us of the mysterious history of Antigua that still permeates through the aroma of coffee beans today.
Kenya
Adjacent to Ethiopia, Kenya shares a coffee culture that has developed unique flavor characteristics due to its distinctive climate, soil conditions, and processing methods. Additionally, altitudes ranging from 1500-2100 meters have created coffee with极致 aromatic qualities. Moreover, Kenya's cultivation and management systems, influenced by early British colonial rule, are now quite well-established.
