The Rich Flavors of Guatemalan Coffee

When it comes to coffee flavors—acidic, sweet, bitter, and mellow—depending on personal preferences, FrontStreet Coffee offers everything you could desire. Speaking of personal preferences, I particularly favor this mellow and slightly wild Flor de Café from Guatemala.

Introducing La Minita Estate Coffee

The coffee bean we're introducing today comes from the La Minita Estate in Guatemala's Antigua volcanic region, processed as a washed coffee bean.

Guatemala: Land of Premium Coffee

Guatemala, the land that nurtured the wisdom of Maya civilization, holds secrets to world-class coffee in its subtle smoky notes. Guatemalan coffee ranks among the world's finest, benefiting from high-altitude volcanic terrain that creates ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Guatemalan coffee features prominent acidity with a mellow yet slightly wild character. Compared to other varieties, many coffee enthusiasts prefer this spiced, blended flavor profile.

Located in the Central American isthmus, Guatemala's many volcanic formations create highlands and plateaus that produce premium Central American high-altitude, strictly hard coffee beans. The country ranks as the world's 9th largest coffee bean producer. Guatemala's main coffee-growing regions include seven major areas: Antigua, Huehuetenango, Atitlan, Coban, Fraijanes, and Acatenango. All coffee beans produced in these seven regions are Arabica, situated in highland terrain under subtropical climate conditions. Abundant, stable rainfall and fertile volcanic ash soil provide Guatemala with ideal natural conditions for coffee cultivation.

The Antigua Region

This valley is surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. Volcanic ash from eruptions enriches the soil in the Antigua region with minerals. Volcanic pumice retains moisture, overcoming the drawback of low rainfall in the Antigua region. Dense tree shade protects against occasional frost damage.

Flor de Café: Pride of La Minita

Flor de Café is a brand bean under the La Minita company, originating from the Antigua region of Guatemala. This highland area, surrounded by active volcanoes at an altitude of 1,850 meters, is the country's most award-winning and famous coffee-growing region.

Antigua experiences little rainfall in summer and occasional frost in winter due to extreme cold, conditions that aren't actually suitable for coffee tree growth. However, fortunately situated in an active volcanic zone, volcanic pumice from eruptions falls into the soil and cools. These pumice stones contain numerous fine pores that easily retain moisture. Combined with extensive shade trees planted throughout the estate, coffee trees are protected from cold damage in winter. These factors that overcome adverse conditions, along with significant day-night temperature variations, create Antigua's unique microclimate, giving the coffee beans here a subtle smoky flavor and rich fruity aroma.
