FrontStreet Coffee - Cake Dripper Introduction
As the name suggests, its shape resembles a cupcake, making it very attractive. This series will likely appeal to those who enjoy baking. The special creased design of the cake filter paper reduces the direct contact area between the filter paper and the dripper while increasing the extraction area. The cake dripper has a flat bottom, so when pouring water, the water flow doesn't tilt toward one direction, allowing for even penetration and reducing cases of under-extraction. This makes it a dripper with a high error tolerance, suitable for beginners to get started.
Also known as the cake dripper, the wave dripper is a patented design by KALITA. The compatible filter paper has creases like cupcake paper, which is why it's also called a cake dripper. However, in English, "Wave" is used, so more people call it the wave dripper. It uses the creases of the filter paper to replace the grooves for backflow. Because the contact area with the cup body is smaller, it allows the coffee grounds to be extracted evenly.
Whether you're a beginner or an enthusiast, this dripper is highly recommended. In recent years, wave drippers have often been seen in pour-over coffee competitions. The reason they don't have such a high market share is that wave filter paper is more expensive—each sheet costs about twice as much as regular filter paper, which is a minor drawback.
The grooves on this dripper are horizontal, but the filter paper is creased like a cake, fold by fold, which is why people often call it the cake cup.
Secondly, the bottom of the dripper has a Y-shaped protrusion with three filter holes.
The advantage of this dripper is that it's easier to maintain stable output. Even beginners can extract stable coffee liquid according to their preferences. However, compared to the V60, the aroma and flavor are not as intense, but the overall flavor and solid texture of the coffee are perfectly preserved.
The filter paper for this dripper is very thin. Be very careful when wetting it, otherwise the creases will be damaged and you'll lose the biggest advantage of this dripper. In fact, you can completely skip wetting the filter paper, as the impact on the beans won't be that severe. After all, failed wetting of filter paper can make the coffee taste particularly bad.
