FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Honduras Coffee
The flavor of Honduras coffee is relatively gentle and mellow, primarily because Honduras's terrain consists mainly of mountains and plateaus. Honduras has a tropical climate with moderate temperatures and abundant rainfall, making it an ideal place for coffee cultivation. Within Honduras, there are 280,000 hectares of coffee plantations, predominantly small coffee farms, most of which are smaller than 3.5 hectares. These coffee plantations account for sixty percent of Honduras's total coffee production.
Most of Honduras's coffee is grown on mountainsides, making machine harvesting impossible. Therefore, coffee farmers hand-pick coffee beans and then carefully process them to produce higher-quality coffee beans. Currently, Honduras harvests three million bags of coffee annually, gradually improving its quality and establishing its position in the market.
Honduras coffee has six major producing regions, mainly located in the western and southern areas: Copan, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, Agalta Tropical, and El Paraiso. The average cultivation altitude for specialty coffee in these regions is above 1,100 meters. The coffee grown in these areas is 69% HG grade, 12% SHG, and 19% CS.
Located on the coastal plains of Central America with a tropical rainforest climate, the average annual temperature is 31°C. The mountainous areas have a subtropical forest climate with an average annual temperature of 23°C. The rainy season runs from June to November, with moderate temperatures and abundant rainfall, making it an ideal place for coffee growth. Honduras coffee has a rich and mellow taste, neither bitter nor sour, with high richness and aroma, quite distinctive. Honduras coffee can reveal multi-layered flavors depending on the degree of roasting.
