FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Honduras Coffee

Honduras is located in northern Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean's Gulf of Fonseca to the south. It shares borders with Nicaragua and El Salvador to the east and south, and Guatemala to the west. The country consists mainly of mountains and highlands. With a tropical climate featuring moderate temperatures and abundant rainfall, it provides ideal conditions for coffee cultivation.

It wasn't until the severe Brazilian frost damage in 1975, which drastically reduced coffee production, that Honduras seized the opportunity to emerge as a major coffee producer. Coffee production surged from 500,000 bags to 1.8 million bags, with all supplies quickly snapped up. Since then, Honduras's coffee production has truly begun to flourish.

The vast majority of coffee varieties cultivated in Honduras are Arabica, primarily including Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Typica, and the Pacas derivative variety.

Honduran coffee beans are characterized by their large, uniform size and consistent, glossy color. For harvesting convenience, farmers prune coffee trees to not exceed 150 centimeters in height, as taller trees would require ladders for picking - a time-consuming process that could damage the trees by bending branches. Since each coffee fruit matures at different times, maintaining high-quality coffee requires manual harvesting, followed by careful selection of ripe fruits. Coffee cherries from the same branch often require several weeks to complete harvesting.

High-quality Honduran coffee undergoes wet processing methods. The beans are first soaked, during which defective fruits float to the surface and are separated and discarded. The quality fruits are then placed in a pulping machine, where rotational force removes the fruit skin. The pulped fruits undergo mechanical screening to select the highest quality beans. Typically, larger fruits represent better maturity. Honduran coffee is dried using natural sun-drying methods, which imparts a subtle fruity aroma to its flavor profile.

The flavor is excellent - rich, mellow, and suitable for blending. Honduran coffee beans are notably gentle and smooth, with occasional hints of sweetness. With low acidity, Honduran coffee stands out among Central American growing regions for its blackberry flavor notes and caramel sweetness. It offers medium body, and some batches even reveal black pepper and tobacco leaf flavors.
