FrontStreet Coffee - Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Gedeb Cooperative G1 Natural Introduction
In the world of coffee, Ethiopia is not only the birthplace of coffee but also renowned for its high-quality coffee beans. For instance, the Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Guji regions all produce numerous premium coffees.
Gedeb Cooperative
Gedeb Cooperative is located in the Gedeo zone, south of the Gedeb area in the Yirgacheffe region. Gedeb Cooperative belongs to the YCFCU (Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union) and was originally part of the Worka Cooperative before becoming independent in 2012 and evolving into the current Gedeb Cooperative. According to YCFCU's official website data, Gedeb Cooperative has 270 farmers cultivating coffee on 504 hectares of land. The cooperative also holds Fair Trade certification and organic farming certification.
Gedeb Cooperative's coffee is grown at altitudes between 1,900 and 2,100 meters, with Heirloom varieties, and the harvest period is from December to January of the following year. The Gedeo zone where Gedeb Cooperative is located receives abundant rainfall during most of the summer, with daytime temperatures ranging between 21°C and 29°C, and nighttime temperatures between 9.8°C and 17°C.
Gedeb Cooperative is currently managed by the Roba family, with Kefyalew, Bekele, and Tesfaye serving as operations managers. All three studied fields such as forestry, geography, population, environmental development, and management during their schooling, which provides Gedeb Cooperative with significant technical advantages.
The Roba family of Gedeb Cooperative believes that biodiversity contributes to environmental sustainability, so the cooperative practices agroforestry planting patterns, growing many grain and fruit crops in addition to coffee.
