Blue Mountain Coffee refers to coffee produced in the steep mountainous areas above 800 meters altitude in Jamaica's Blue Mountains. This coffee not only has a rich and mellow flavor, but when tasted, the combination of sweet, sour, and bitter flavors is perfectly balanced, so it's completely without bitterness, having only a moderate and perfect acidity.
Because coffee trees grow on steep mountain terrain, mechanical harvesting is impossible. Only the most skilled workers can harvest them, and they must choose the optimal time to pick the coffee beans. Then, through complex processes and strict procedures, they are made into coffee that can be directly brewed and consumed.
Therefore, Blue Mountain Coffee is not only a leader among specialty coffees but also commands high prices due to its scarce production and excellent taste. This has made Blue Mountain Coffee a prime target for many unscrupulous individuals who create and sell counterfeit products.
Many products marketed under the Blue Mountain Coffee banner are either inferior coffee grown in low-altitude areas or other regions that can only be called "Jamaica High Mountain Beans" or "Jamaica Washed Beans," or they are blends created by some merchants to impersonate Blue Mountain Coffee.
1. Check the Supply Channel
Blue Mountain Coffee's production is scarce, which means it's unlikely to appear on supermarket or store shelves, nor is it likely to be brought back by a relative "returning from abroad." In 1972, Jamaica signed a contract with Japan, providing 90% of its production to the Japanese market, with the remaining 10% (about 3,500 barrels of 70kg oak barrels) available for market sales (it's also the only coffee that still uses oak barrel packaging).

Coffee Bean Resting Period
According to SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America), the length of the resting period is related to the degree of coffee bean roasting. The darker the roast, the more pronounced the degassing effect, and the faster it reaches maturity. The lighter the roast, the less obvious the degassing effect, and the longer it takes to mature. The carbon dioxide produced during roasting needs time to be naturally released. Without this process, carbon dioxide will inevitably hinder extraction, preventing water from fully contacting the grounds and leading to uneven extraction.

In 1950, the Jamaican government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board to set quality standards for Jamaican coffee, supervise the implementation of these standards, and grant special official seals to exported raw and roasted coffee.
