Yirgacheffe is a renowned name in the specialty coffee world. It is a town located in the southern highlands of Ethiopia and serves as a collection center for nearby coffee beans. Additionally, it has become synonymous with coffee produced in the Yirgacheffe region, characterized by rich citrus, lemon notes, and floral characteristics.

ETHIOPIA, YIRGACHEFFE, KOCHERE

In 1995, Ethiopia reorganized its administrative regions. The Yirgacheffe we know today was designated within the Gedeo Zone of the new SNNPR region. Currently, Yirgacheffe is located in central Gedeo, with the famous Yirgacheffe town situated approximately 25 miles north of Kochere. The production model primarily involves local small farmers delivering their batches to cooperatives for unified processing. For a long time, it has been celebrated as one of the finest origins of coffee in southern Ethiopia.

Currently, in ECX classification, Yirgacheffe can be further divided into four sub-regions: Kochere, Gelana Abaya, Yirgacheffe, and Wenago.

However, generally speaking, Yirgacheffe refers to coffee produced within the Gedeo administrative region.

Knowledge Extension:

Washed coffee requires more resources (water) than natural processing, therefore the produced washed coffee beans are of higher quality.
