African Coffee: Introduction to Uganda Growing Regions - How Uganda Coffee is Graded
FrontStreet Coffee Introduces the Uganda Growing Region
The Uganda growing region is located at the source of the Nile River and is a landlocked African country. Although it shares a long history of coffee production with other East African countries, wars caused by ethnic conflicts have consistently prevented improvements in coffee quality. The best coffee is mostly grown in areas adjacent to Kenya, and some high-quality coffee beans are transported to Kenya and sold as Kenyan coffee. It wasn't until 15 years ago when the war stopped that Uganda emerged as a country with rapidly developing coffee production.
Each year, major coffee-producing countries in Africa host national green bean competitions called "The Taste of Harvest" (TOH), similar to the Cup of Excellence in Central and South America. TOH has become a competition venue for discovering the best coffees from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Congo.
Coffee grading is conducted by experts using Q and R grades. Coffees scoring above 80 are considered specialty coffees and automatically attract good markets and even better prices. Therefore, competition demonstrates that good practices can benefit farmers. As part of its mission, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) regularly trains farmers across the country to produce high-quality coffee through proper processing methods. Consequently, regions such as Kanungu, Sipi, Iganga, and Luwero have all developed areas that produce high-quality coffee.
