How to Drink Coffee Powder and Its Shelf Life

In first and second-tier cities, many office workers face significant pressure, so they need to brew coffee to relieve stress, refresh themselves, and improve their mental state and work efficiency. So, how do you drink coffee powder? FrontStreet Coffee will provide a detailed introduction: how to drink coffee powder and how long its shelf life generally lasts. Hope this can be helpful and inspiring to everyone.

How to Drink Coffee Powder:

How should you drink coffee powder? Actually, the method of drinking coffee depends on its type. If it's instant coffee powder, you can brew it directly with water. If it's freshly ground coffee powder, you'll need a coffee maker to process it, as direct brewing will affect the taste due to residue.

Method:

1. Put the coffee powder into a French press.

2. Brew the coffee powder and water according to a 1:18 ratio, making sure to control the water temperature at around 92 degrees Celsius.

3. Press down the small filter in the cup to let the coffee seep into the cup.

4. Add milk or sugar as desired.

How Long is the Shelf Life of Coffee Powder:

1. The shelf life mentioned here refers to the period during which the coffee's aroma can be retained, not the time when the coffee will spoil. Because coffee, unlike other foods, has very low moisture content and doesn't easily spoil.

2. After coffee is made, the coffee grounds will mold and grow hair because water has been added, making the coffee grounds wet. If you dry the coffee grounds, they won't grow mold.

3. Generally, coffee packaged in aluminum foil has a shelf life of 1 year or 1.5 years. Since there are no unified standards in this area internationally, different coffee companies have slightly different shelf lives.

4. When choosing a coffee container, select a product with a rubber gasket on the inside of the lid, because coffee bean aroma easily dissipates and absorbs surrounding odors, so you need to use a sealed container for storage.

We all know coffee - the stick-form 3-in-1 instant coffee in supermarkets, canned powdered or bottled granulated instant pure coffee powder, and freshly ground coffee provided in cafes and fast-food restaurants - all belong to coffee. But not every type of coffee will be delicious, especially freshly ground coffee. You must master the coffee brewing skills to make delicious coffee. Let's learn together.

Brewing Great Coffee

Is Coffee Brewed in a Pot?

Brewing coffee refers to extracting the essential aromas and nutrients from coffee powder, not necessarily stewing it in a small pot.

In the earliest days, people didn't have more vessels to filter coffee grounds, so they would directly use pots to boil coffee and then drink the upper layer of coffee liquid. Later, to avoid eating coffee grounds, people put coffee powder into small cloth bags and tied them before boiling. Now, there are many vessels that can brew coffee, including coffee machines, pour-over equipment, French presses, siphon pots, and other specialized vessels for coffee extraction.

How to Brew Coffee for Great Taste?

In fact, we don't really care how many coffee brewing vessels there are. What we care about is how to correctly use these coffee vessels to brew good coffee, making it more delicious!

Limited by space, we won't discuss too much about the brewing techniques for each type of coffee vessel (if you're interested, you can check my previous articles for detailed introductions). Today, we'll mainly look at the commonalities of all coffee brewing vessels and how to make the coffee they brew more rich and flavorful.

Must Pre-moisten

If conditions allow, this step must be done. Don't say that your equipment doesn't have this function - there are always more solutions than difficulties! Of course, the easiest are manually operated vessels. Drip and filter-type vessels make it easy for coffee powder and water to fully contact, and other tools can also work.

Pay Attention to Grinding Consistency Matching

Whether a cup of coffee tastes good, besides the coffee beans themselves and roasting, the brewing process is the biggest variable factor and quite subjective. Grinding plays a very important role in brewing, so you must match the grinding consistency to avoid under-extraction caused by too-coarse grounds or over-extraction caused by too-fine grounds.

(For drip-type vessels, such as pour-over and drip coffee machines, medium grind is recommended; for immersion-type vessels, such as French presses, medium-coarse grind is recommended; for pressure-filter vessels, such as espresso machines and Aeropress, fine grind is recommended)

Water Temperature Matters

For manually brewed coffee, water temperature is generally recommended between 82-92 degrees Celsius and can be adjusted according to the characteristics of the coffee beans.

Amount and Ratio Must Be Appropriate

Everything needs a proper dosage and ratio, and coffee is no exception. Different vessels use different powder-to-water ratios (referring to the ratio of coffee powder to water), so pay attention to adjusting according to the vessel you use. If you're not sure, you can leave me a message for advice.

Can You Add Sugar If It's Too Bitter?

Why not? Whether it tastes good or not isn't something that professionals can comment on. After all, you're the one drinking it. If you think it's too bitter, why not add sugar or milk to adjust the flavor?

This concludes the introduction to knowledge about how to drink coffee powder and its shelf life. When brewing coffee powder, pay attention to the method and water temperature to brew coffee with a rich, aromatic, and smooth taste.
