What is the Operation Cherry Red Project?

The Operation Cherry Red Project is a program aimed at improving the quality and value of Ethiopian green coffee beans. Initiated in 2007 by Dutch trader Trabocca and local farmers, it involves hand-harvesting 100% mature red coffee cherries during the harvest season, divided by microclimate zones. This ensures that every coffee seed is in a mature, nutrient-rich state. In subsequent years, the Operation Cherry Red Project has successively added facilities such as drying racks, cherry depulpers, coffee bean sorters, and cupping laboratories to the production areas. Therefore, today's Operation Cherry Red Project coffee beans are already a guarantee of high quality.

The Context of Ethiopian Coffee Production

Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, has excellent coffee tree varieties and soil, but farmers' incomes are not high. In the past, laws required all sales to go through the ECX (Ethiopian Commodity Exchange). For various reasons, the ECX model was not favorable to small farmers and represented a business model of quantity over quality.

Trabocca's Initiative and Impact

After the unified sales laws were relaxed, Dutch coffee trader Trabocca initiated the OCR (Operation Cherry Red) Project with farmers in 2007, aiming to improve their incomes and encourage higher coffee bean quality. Trabocca selects small farmers' coffee beans through cupping and then auctions them publicly for a minimum of US$7.5/lbs. Trabocca only charges US$2.5 for administrative fees, while farmers are guaranteed to receive a base auction price of US$5.

If the bean quality is excellent and the auction price exceeds US$7.5, the entire amount goes to the farmers. This open, highly transparent project has helped many small farmers increase their incomes over the past decade. Farmers have also come to understand that as long as they hand-select the best mature beans, they can sell them at good prices. With increased income, they can reinvest in hardware equipment such as drying racks, gradually changing the entire economic ecosystem of coffee farmers. In the context of globalization dominated by large oligopolistic corporations, this gives small farmers another opportunity to survive.
