Differences in Origin, Varieties, and Flavor Characteristics Between Mandheling Coffee Beans and PWN Golden Mandheling

Many people have heard of Mandheling coffee beans, but FrontStreet Coffee has found that most people only know about Mandheling in general, without understanding the details. For example, what are the differences between the famous Golden Mandheling, Tiger Mandheling, and Lintong Mandheling coffee beans?
Origin of the Mandheling Name
Actually, Mandheling is not a region name, place name, port name, or coffee variety name. Its name is actually a mispronunciation of the Indonesian Mandheling ethnic group. During World War II when Japan occupied Indonesia, a Japanese soldier drank exceptionally mellow coffee at a café. He asked the owner for the name of the coffee, but the owner misunderstood and thought he was asking about his ethnicity, so he replied: "Mandheling." After the war, the Japanese soldier recalled the "Mandheling" he had drunk in Indonesia. He then commissioned Indonesian coffee merchants to ship 15 tons to Japan, which became surprisingly popular. The name Mandheling was thus spread.

Golden Mandheling Coffee Beans
When it comes to Golden Mandheling, we must mention PWN company. PWN's full name is Pwani Coffee Company. This is a very famous coffee purchasing company in Indonesia, mainly purchasing Mandheling coffee beans. Almost all the best producing areas in Indonesia are acquired by them, so most beans from PWN company are unique specialty coffees. Golden Mandheling is a product produced by this company. After purchasing the raw beans, they undergo multiple rounds of manual selection to pick out plump, flawless beans. Finally, these premium beans that have undergone层层筛选 like a talent show can be classified as Golden Mandheling.

However, PWN company has registered Golden Mandheling as a trademark, which means that in the future, only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN company can be considered genuine "Golden Mandheling." Many beans on the market that are not produced by PWN company but carry the Golden Mandheling brand name should actually be called Specialty Mandheling.
FrontStreet Coffee teaches everyone a method to identify Golden Mandheling: each bag of exported Golden Mandheling comes with a certificate of authenticity. If merchants can provide this certificate when you purchase coffee beans, it proves that these are genuine Golden Mandheling coffee beans.

Tiger Mandheling Coffee Beans
Tiger Mandheling is produced in the Lake Tawa area of Aceh Province, Sumatra Island. Lake Tawa is located in the Gayo mountainous area north of Aceh Province, Sumatra. Indonesia, straddling both sides of the equator, has a hot and humid tropical rainforest climate with abundant rainfall, and fertile volcanic soil provides rich nutrients for coffee. However, due to its remote location and inconvenient transportation, coffee cultivation did not begin until 1924, mostly using traditional shade-grown, pesticide-free organic farming methods.
In Aceh, coffee is the second most important export economic crop in the region. It is estimated that there are about 60,000 small-scale coffee farmers locally, each owning about 1-2 hectares of coffee cultivation land. The traditional Indonesian coffee trade method is a multi-point supply chain, starting from farmers, passing through multiple layers of middlemen, before gradually gathering large quantities of export goods. In Indonesia's coffee trading system, direct trade where a single window collects goods from farmers and arranges export is quite rare locally.
The requirement for Tiger Mandheling is that the flavor should have traditional Chinese medicine herbal aroma, and only Mandheling beans above 17 mesh with a defect rate below 4% can be called Tiger.
Lintong Mandheling Coffee Beans
The Lintong region is a traditional producing area for Mandheling coffee beans. Coffee beans produced from here can all be called Lintong Mandheling.
