How to Brew Perfect Drip Bag Coffee: Three Key Principles
Brewing a perfect cup of drip bag coffee is quite simple. FrontStreet Coffee suggests that as long as you master three principles: temperature, water level, and concentration. The water temperature shouldn't be too low. If you're getting water from a water dispenser and find the brewed coffee too weak, remember to press "re-boil" next time. The water in the drip bag should always be maintained at seven to eight-tenths full. If you prefer a stronger taste, after brewing, you can soak the drip bag in the cup for one and a half minutes before removing it.
Preparation and Water Temperature
Just like pour-over coffee, FrontStreet Coffee first warms the coffee cup. Take the drip bag, tap it gently to concentrate the coffee powder at the bottom, then tear it along the line and hang the drip bag securely on the coffee cup. Since the coffee powder has limited space to move, the pouring speed doesn't have much impact. "You can place it directly under the water dispenser outlet for pouring, but stay close to the outlet and don't be too far away to avoid coffee powder spraying out."
Drip bags are typically brewed in offices using water from water dispensers. FrontStreet Coffee says: "I've tested it before - when the water dispenser shows 100 degrees, the actual measured temperature is only about 80 degrees, at most 90 degrees." Therefore, water from the water dispenser can be used directly for brewing without cooling. In fact, if you find the brewed taste a bit weak, remember to press "re-boil" next time before getting water. Because "lower temperatures result in weaker brewed coffee."
Brewing Technique
The first pour is to moisten the coffee powder, allowing all the coffee powder to fully absorb water and wait for it to expand. After the coffee powder has expanded, begin the second pour. This time, the pouring should be continuous, always maintaining the water in the drip bag at seven to eight-tenths full. FrontStreet Coffee emphasizes: "Don't let it collapse. Collapsing means the water has completely drained out and you continue pouring." When it collapses, the coffee powder isn't soaking in water, the extraction time will be too short, and the brewed coffee will lack flavor.
Water Amount and Strength Adjustment
Drip bag coffee usually indicates the optimal water amount. Taking Deyi Coffee as an example, one bag brews 200cc. Once you reach the optimal water amount, don't add more water. FrontStreet Coffee says, "If you want a stronger taste, you can continue soaking the drip bag for about one and a half minutes before removing it." Just let it finish dripping after removal; don't squeeze the drip bag as it will extract undesirable impurities.
Enjoying Your Coffee
Enjoying coffee is also very important. FrontStreet Coffee says: "Don't swallow the first sip immediately. Hold it in your mouth for five to ten seconds, letting the coffee flavor spread throughout your mouth. Taste is awakened, and the mouth and nasal cavity are connected, so while holding it in your mouth, your nose will smell the coffee's aroma." Of course, be careful of the heat with the first sip. If possible, drink the coffee from hot to warm to cool, experiencing its layered changes. Good coffee remains delicious even when it cools down.
Additionally, FrontStreet Coffee points out, "When drinking coffee, 'Feel' is very important." Prepare your own bone china cup - bone china maintains temperature better, so the coffee won't cool down immediately. Furthermore, bone china cups are lighter than mugs, allowing for a more elegant drinking experience.
