The Nuevo Oriente Region

The Nuevo Oriente region is one of the seven specialty coffee producing regions defined by the Guatemalan Coffee Association (Anacafe) in 1980. This area is defined as the land between Barberena, Jutiapa, and Chiquimula.

Since 1950, coffee in this region has been grown almost entirely by small producers. Today, what was once one of Guatemala's poorest and most isolated areas is now vibrant and continuously growing, with almost every farm on the mountains becoming its own coffee production unit. Most coffee from the Nuevo Oriente region comes from family-owned small estates that also combine coffee cultivation with other basic crops for daily sustenance. This region has rapidly gained fame among coffee connoisseurs, and their demand for this coffee increases year by year. The result of this situation is that every farm in the mountains has transitioned to growing coffee, replacing other crops as the primary product and source of income.

Situated in a region with frequent past volcanic activity, the Nuevo Oriente region has a cloudy and rainy climate. The soil here consists of metamorphic rocks evenly mixed with many minerals, making it different from the soils of other volcanic soil regions.
