Farm Introduction

Chicua is a young estate nestled on the mountainside of a volcano, overlooking the magnificent Lake Atitlán. This hilltop paradise was formed from hundreds of years of lava flows from two nearby volcanoes – Atitlán and San Pedro. The word "Chicua" comes from the K'iche' language of the Maya people, meaning "place where there is water," a term that perfectly describes the heart and soul of this coffee estate.

The coffee trees at Chicua Estate are planted at altitudes between 1700 to 1800 meters, growing in quite high-altitude regions. Sometimes in the early morning hours, the leaves are covered with frost, which then gradually melts under the sweet morning sun. As the sunlight becomes stronger, various shade trees that have grown locally for hundreds of years play the role of protecting the coffee trees. These shade trees are ecologically important components of this volcanic mountainside ecosystem. Sometimes walking through this pleasant green orchard brings many unexpected surprises, like being hit by falling fresh avocado fruits!

The new coffee project at Chicua Estate is managed by third and fourth generation coffee growers, where their deep love for coffee can be found in the coffee estates they manage. Through continuous collaboration with renowned local Mayan agronomists, the coffee produced by Chicua Estate stands among Guatemala's high-quality coffees.

To combat Roselinia (a type of root disease fungus), Chicua Estate collaborates with Guatemala's local Del Valle University and ANACAFE (Guatemala Coffee Association) to jointly investigate and research methods to combat the disease without affecting the ecological environment.
