Coffee Story

Worka. The Wuri Processing Station is located in the most premium area of the entire Yirgacheffe region, which is the Gedeb area. Gedeb is situated in the southeastern corner of Yirgacheffe. Traveling about 50 kilometers south from Yirgacheffe town, the altitude rises from Yirgacheffe town's 1,850 meters to 2,030 meters at the processing station, making it the highest area in the entire Yirgacheffe region. Coffee professionals often refer to this area as Gedeb, primarily because the largest town center in this region is named Gedeb.

Here, you can say you've reached the most remote area. Continuing for less than ten minutes, you'll arrive at Worka, where the beloved Worka Cooperative is located nearby. Worka village is one of the 16 villages in Gedeb. More precisely, the Worka Wuri Processing Station is located in an area locally known as Worka-Sakaro.

The origin of the Worka-Sakaro village name is quite interesting. During Emperor Haile Selassie's era, an official visited the area for inspection and found that the people in this region were particularly warm and hospitable, thus naming the area "Worik," meaning gold. In the language of the local indigenous Gedi'o people, this is "Worka." Additionally, there is a giant sacred tree named "Sakaro" in the area. Later generations used the most distinctive and historically significant features of the area, Worka and Sakaro, as the place name, making it quite representative.

The Worka-Sakaro village currently has 11,025 residents, scattered across an area of 1,297 hectares. The Worka Wuri Processing Station is one of two existing processing stations in Worka village, established in 2012. "Wuri" in the language of the local indigenous Gedi'o people means "high altitude." As the name suggests, this reflects its exceptional geographical location—not only is it situated in the most premium area of Yirgacheffe, but its inherent high-altitude advantage creates a unique and excellent flavor profile. The exporter who now owns this processing station has had a business relationship with us for over eight years. Our first direct-sourcing Ethiopian purchasing case was in collaboration with them.

In 2018, the ECX/export system underwent significant reforms through efforts from various parties. This meant that not all coffee beans from private processing stations needed to go through the ECX bidding platform. Under this new system, if a batch of coffee beans has already found a buyer through an exporter and is ready for export, after leaving the processing station and passing ECX inspection and grading, they can be "directly" sent to the exporter's dry processing station for final processing before export. This new pathway represents the birth of a legitimate traceability channel.
