Different brewing devices have different operating methods. During the process of making American-style drip coffee, the key is to allow the coffee to release its strong aroma, as the water temperature during brewing is much higher than during pour-over brewing, resulting in a more intense flavor profile.
Pour Over Weighing Coffee Beans

Are the steps for making pour-over coffee too complicated and tedious? Is there a convenient way to enjoy coffee similar to pour-over? Of course! FrontStreet Coffee recommends using an American drip coffee maker.

Many people automatically think of unpleasant coffee when they hear about American drip coffee makers. This is actually a misunderstanding of these machines. The American drip coffee maker originated in 1965 and was one of the most popular home appliances in the 1980s. Its working principle is simple: just place filter paper in the upper compartment, add coffee grounds, fill the water tank, start the machine, and the American drip maker will automatically heat the water and inject it into the coffee grounds to drip coffee liquid. Some coffee makers also have coffee liquid保温 or heating functions.

Because the coffee beans used in the past were roasted dark and stored for a long time, the resulting drip coffee was very weak and only had a dull bitterness. Additionally, Americans generally like to add water multiple times to continue brewing, resulting in very weak coffee flavor after several brews. This has always been criticized about American coffee.

However, when used properly, American drip makers can also produce good coffee.

1. Coffee Bean Selection

First, in terms of coffee bean selection, FrontStreet Coffee recommends using freshly roasted coffee beans because freshly roasted beans have full coffee flavor. Over time, the coffee flavor dissipates, leaving only dull coffee bitterness. Generally, coffee beans are best consumed 4-7 days after the roast date, and the optimal tasting period is within 2 months.

Some friends might ask what coffee beans work best with American drip makers. Generally, any beans suitable for pour-over coffee can be used with American drip makers. As for which specific coffee beans to use, it depends on personal flavor preferences.

2. Appropriate Coffee-to-Water Ratio

Generally, FrontStreet Coffee suggests a ratio of 1:15-1:17. For 25g of coffee grounds, you can add 375-425ml of water to the tank. This ratio produces coffee with moderate concentration and balanced flavor, avoiding burnt bitterness or astringent thinness.

3. Appropriate Grind Size

The grind size is the same as for pour-over coffee - medium-fine grind, with 80% passing through a #20 standard sieve.

Grind Coarseness

Specific Operation Method

Place the pot in the coffee maker, open the lid, add 25g of coffee grounds, and add 400ml of hot water to the tank. Then close the lid and press the start button. The American drip maker will begin extracting the coffee.

Water flows from the tank into the U-shaped heating tube, heats to 100°C, and then through water pressure and thermal pressure, the hot water at the front is pushed to the outlet pipe and sprayed through the outlet. When the hot water drips onto the coffee grounds in the filter, after full saturation and extraction, it flows into the pot. After about 5-8 minutes, a pot of American drip coffee is complete.
