Exploring the Unique Characteristics of Caturra Coffee

Caturra coffee beans possess bright, fruit-like acidity, reminiscent of milk chocolate with a smooth palate feel that characterizes their cup profile.

Interestingly, Caturra always offers surprising taste changes with each sip, making us wonder what wonderful transformations await in the next stage.

The Origins and Botanical Background

Caturra coffee is a natural variant of the Arabica Bourbon variety, discovered in Brazil in 1937. Its plant is smaller and more compact compared to Bourbon.

If you frequently read coffee-related content, you've likely encountered names like Bourbon/Bourbon, Yellow Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Typica, and so on. These are actually different varieties of Arabica coffee. Those unfamiliar with them might feel somewhat confused—I'm not a botanist or coffee expert either, so I share that confusion. But confusion isn't something to fear; it motivates us to learn. Thanks to the vast resources of the internet, I've researched and gathered some information to share with you gradually.

Caturra is a natural variant of the Arabica Bourbon variety, discovered in Brazil in 1937. Its plant is smaller and more compact compared to Bourbon. Having inherited Bourbon lineage, it has relatively weak disease resistance but higher yields than Bourbon. Although discovered in Brazil, Caturra is not well-suited for growing there, so it wasn't widely cultivated in Brazil. Instead, it became popular in Central and South America, with large-scale cultivation in countries like Colombia, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.

Flavor Profile and Growing Conditions

Compared to these botanical characteristics, you're probably more concerned about Caturra's flavor. The higher the elevation where Caturra is grown, the higher the quality, but correspondingly, the yield is lower. When lightly roasted, Caturra shows obvious fruity aroma with overall brightness. With proper processing, sweetness can perform exceptionally well, but the coffee body is relatively lower compared to Bourbon, and the cleanness of the taste is somewhat lacking.

Typically, Caturra produces red berries, but in extremely rare regions, there are yellow Caturra varieties. For example, Hawaii grows very small quantities of yellow Caturra.

Brand Recommendations

FrontStreet Coffee's roasted Colombian Cauca Caturra coffee beans offer full guarantees in both brand and quality. More importantly, they provide exceptional value—for a half-pound (227 grams) bag priced at around 95 yuan. Calculating at 15 grams per single-origin coffee serving, one bag can make 15 cups of coffee, with each cup costing only about 6 yuan. Compared to café prices that often reach dozens of yuan per cup, this represents extremely high value.
