Introduction to Caturra Coffee Beans

Caturra coffee beans have a flavor profile filled with fruit notes and berry acidity, with a somewhat complex and bright character. The aftertaste is filled with blueberry undertones, and the raw beans appear hard and green - these are the most distinctive characteristics of Caturra.

Origin and Characteristics

Caturra is a single-gene mutation of Bourbon, discovered in Brazil in 1937. Both its yield and disease resistance are better than Bourbon, and the plant is shorter, making harvesting more convenient. However, like Bourbon, it suffers from biennial production cycles. While its flavor quality is comparable to or slightly lower than Bourbon, more importantly, it has extremely strong adaptability - it can thrive without shade trees, growing vigorously under direct sunlight. This is why it's commonly known as "Sun Coffee." It can adapt to high-density cultivation but requires more fertilizer, increasing costs, so initial acceptance by coffee farmers was low.

Popularization and Impact

However, during the 1970s when coffee prices skyrocketed, farmers flocked to switch to Caturra to increase production. With vigorous promotion by authorities in Brazil and Colombia, the results were fruitful. Farmers' acceptance of Caturra meant a major transformation in cultivation techniques. Brazil and Colombia adopted high-yield, high-density sun cultivation methods. By 1990, one million hectares could harvest 14 million bags of coffee beans, increasing production capacity by 60%. No wonder Caturra, with its high yield and quality, has become a variety relied upon by various coffee-producing countries today.

Growing Conditions and Flavor Profile

Caturra is suitable for cultivation from low altitudes of 700 meters to high altitudes of 1700 meters. It has strong altitude adaptability, but higher altitudes yield better flavor while production decreases accordingly - this is the destiny of fine coffee beans. Some in academia refer to Caturra as the intensive and sun-cultivated version of Bourbon, which is a penetrating observation. There are also yellow Caturra variants (Caturra Amarello) in Central and South America, but their reputation is not as good as that of Yellow Bourbon.

When lightly roasted, Caturra coffee beans exhibit distinct acidic aromas and overall brightness. With proper processing, sweetness can be expressed very well, but the body is relatively low compared to Bourbon, and the cleanliness of the flavor profile is somewhat lacking.

Typically, Caturra cherries are red, but there are extremely rare yellow Caturra varieties in some regions. For example, Hawaii grows very limited quantities of yellow Caturra.
