Are Rwandan Coffee Beans Good?

Coffee from Africa always gives people a wild and unrestrained impression, but Rwandan coffee beans are surprisingly soft, fragrant, and full-bodied - this is my first impression of Rwandan coffee, speaking of Africa. In terms of Africa, Rwanda's coffee industry is indeed remarkable, as the country thrives primarily on producing high-quality coffee beans. Rwandan coffee flavor is described as having "grass aroma" with tropical climate characteristics. This is precisely because Rwanda's exceptionally fertile soil and suitable climate greatly contribute to plant growth. The coffee trees here seem to be driven or forced to grow upward rapidly, as if they grow too quickly to produce the finest coffee beans. However, regardless of this, the soft and rich flavor of Rwandan coffee beans is excellent. Especially the unique rich caramel aroma and sweetness that appears at the finish - it's truly worth tasting personally.

Rwanda Super Strong New Bean - Shyira

After today's brewing test, we finally confirmed the launch of this new bean. This might be our favorite Rwandan coffee bean since we started working with coffee!

Shyira is a newly built processing station this year in the Nybihu region of Rwanda's western province. Although it's a newly built processing station, its equipment and management are quite impressive. The processing station itself is situated at an altitude of 2000m, while the coffee cherries it processes even reach altitudes of 2400m. Such high altitude allows the coffee cherries to mature longer, giving the coffee higher intensity flavor and sweetness.

The Shyira processing station is located right next to a river, so water resources during processing are not a concern. During the processing, Shyira station employees sing the Shyira station song, like a unique ritual, as if bringing soul into the coffee cherries. During different stages of processing, regular turning is performed - on one hand, this can remove defective beans, and on the other hand, it can clear the mucilage residue on the coffee beans.

This processing method makes the Shyira bean very clear and clean. The flavor profile shows citrus, jasmine floral notes, green tea, as well as pineapple and açaí. Cleanliness and clarity are major selling points of this bean, along with surprising cotton candy sweetness.

Cupping Notes:

Floral aroma in the cup, with black cherry flavor and berry notes.

Apple aroma with caramel.

Honey-like texture, balanced and clean coffee.
