Papua New Guinea is located east of Indonesia and features a typical island climate. Situated between the equator and 10 degrees south latitude, it has tropical rainforests, volcanic rock, and highland terrain with elevations ranging from 1200-2500 meters, making it a paradise for coffee cultivation. Local production is relatively small, with 85% of total production coming from small farmers' garden cultivation systems. Small farmers join local cooperatives to share processing equipment. Coffee is the second largest agricultural export in Papua New Guinea, demonstrating the importance of the coffee industry to the country's economy.

Due to different coffee varieties than Indonesia, higher elevations than Sumatra, and the use of washed processing, PNG coffee's regional flavor characteristics are distinctly different from Indonesia's heavy and subdued notes. Instead, it exhibits bright, sweet and sour notes, with floral and fruit aromas, making it more similar to South American flavors.

Sigri Estate Information

Sigri Estate is located in the Waghi Valley of the Western Highlands, approximately 1500 meters above sea level, with well-drained volcanic soil. The estate was established in 1950 and has been operating for over 60 years, making it a pioneer in the local coffee industry. Due to its location in the southern hemisphere, the local coffee harvest season runs from May to August (compared to Central and South America, which mostly harvests from October to February of the following year).

The farm and surrounding small farmers harvest mature red coffee cherries from a vast area of nearly 413 hectares and send them to the estate's own processing facilities for post-processing. However, New Guinea's washed processing method differs from that used in Central and South America, employing triple-washed fermentation. Each soaking lasts about 24 hours, with clean water replaced each time to control the coffee flavor. After washing, the green beans are dehulled and then graded in various categories such as AA, AB, PB (peaberries), etc. This meticulous post-processing method brings bright and delicate fruity acidity to the coffee itself, with a clean and lingering sweet taste.

Environmental Sustainability

Sigri Estate places great importance on ecological and environmental issues within the plantation. They grow two different types of shade trees to provide a good growing environment for coffee and also offer excellent habitats for birds. Currently, there are 90 different species of birds and various wild animals within the plantation area, making it an excellent model of sustainable coffee estate management. It's particularly noteworthy that Papua New Guinea coffee cultivation basically does not use artificial fertilizers or chemical agents, with all pest and disease control carried out through natural, non-toxic methods.
