Why is Papua New Guinea Sigri AA called the "Paradise Bird"? Paradise Bird coffee beans are affordably priced, yet their flavor quality absolutely rivals that of other renowned coffee origins like Yirgacheffe.

Origin and Growing Practices

Papua New Guinea is located on the island of Guinea, near Indonesia, but its coffee profile differs completely from Mandheling's rich, full-bodied character. PNG coffee beans offer a clean taste, abundant with floral notes and pleasant aftertaste.

The majority of PNG coffee is produced by small farmers rather than organized large corporations. Most farmers cultivate between 20 to 500-600 coffee trees. PNG growers generally avoid artificial fertilizers and chemical sprays, implementing all pest and disease control through manual labor.

They utilize an innovative three-stage washed processing method, involving three 24-hour washing cycles that ensure complete pulp removal, followed by natural sun-drying.

The Origin of "Paradise Bird" Name

So why is it called "Paradise Bird"? This name comes from the bird-of-paradise (also called "Paradise Bird") that appears on Papua New Guinea's national flag. Consequently, the burlap bags used for exporting coffee beans also feature this bird, leading to the name "Paradise Bird Coffee Beans"!

Coffee Classification System

Let's use the most notable specialty grades AA and A as examples:

1. Both AA and A grade coffees belong to the specialty coffee category, primarily originating from larger estates.

For AA grade: Bean size exceeds 18 screen, with an oval, flat shape. Defect count: Maximum 10 defects per kilogram. The green beans appear greenish-blue. The green beans should taste clean, the roasted flavor should be clean and smooth. Cup quality must be excellent (Fine Cup).

2. A grade beans measure larger than 17 screen, with cup quality reaching at least GTF level (Good to Fine) - meaning good to excellent taste. Other defect counts and green bean conditions are the same as AA grade.

Sigri Paradise Bird Estate Green Coffee Introduction

Sigri Estate is located in the Wahgi Valley of Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands Province. Its specialty coffee is renowned in markets across Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and North America.

The estate sits at an average altitude of 1,600 meters, featuring Arusha varieties introduced from Tanzania and a cool climate. Abundant rainfall provides ideal growing conditions for the coffee trees.

Paradise Bird Estate maintains exceptionally stable quality season after season, earning the admiration of European and American coffee roasting experts.

Sigri is a region that places great emphasis on ecological preservation. Coffee trees are grown under natural forest shade without disturbing the original woodland, while maintaining the ecological integrity of wildlife habitats.

The coffee exhibits notes of cherry, stone fruit, tea fragrance, and fruit aromas. It offers the sweetness of maple and fruit sugars, with a smooth, throat-coating quality and excellent aftertaste. When cooled, it reveals wine-like acidity, while the bottom of the cup emits a rich caramel fragrance with substantial, complex layers.
