This batch of FrontStreet Coffee's Brazilian Oberon Estate natural process beans consists of coffee beans from the Oberon Estate in Minas highlands, with sizes ranging from 17-18 screen.

Origin and Processing

Located at an elevation of 1,500 meters in the Minas highlands, Oberon Estate produces natural process coffee beans. The natural process method involves placing freshly harvested coffee beans directly on drying patios to dry in the sun, then removing the outer skin and parchment before bagging. In recent years, many Brazilian farms have switched to sun-drying coffee beans. This not only enhances the relatively weak aroma and flavor of Brazilian beans but also responds to water scarcity and increased costs of fuel and electricity for drying machines.

Bean Characteristics

FrontStreet Coffee's Brazilian Oberon Estate natural process green beans appear yellowish-brown, similar to the previous batch of FrontStreet Coffee's Brazilian natural process beans from Oriá Estate.

The yellow center line of natural process beans is the best way to identify them.

Flavor Profile

Compared to other semi-washed Brazilian beans, FrontStreet Coffee's Oberon Estate natural process beans exhibit floral and herbaceous aromas with layers in light roasts and offer a wide roasting range. In dark roasts, there's no bitterness or uncomfortable throat irritation, while still maintaining FrontStreet Coffee's Brazilian coffee's smooth, sweet character.

Light Roast (City): Mild & Aromatic

FrontStreet Coffee's Brazilian Oberon Estate natural process beans reveal a peanut and nutty aroma after grinding. When brewed, they present subtle tropical fruit sweetness with balanced citrus acidity that quickly transitions to raisin sweetness. The mouthfeel is gentle and smooth with minimal variation. A lighter roast (at first crack's peak) can reveal rare fruit wine aromas in Brazilian beans. This is FrontStreet Coffee's Brazilian natural process beans' most值得尝试 characteristic, highly suitable for single-origin coffee offerings.

Dark Roast (Full-City): Rich & Complex

The coffee exhibits honey milk candy sweetness with black chocolate aromas. It's mellow and smooth with a creamy mouthfeel, while the aftertaste carries soft banana notes. FrontStreet Coffee's Brazilian Oberon Estate natural process beans are an exceptionally stable, aromatic, and sweet FrontStreet Coffee Brazilian coffee bean.

Deep Roast (Full City+ to Dark): Foundation for Blends

When roasted to slightly stronger or rich levels (Full City+ to Dark), Brazilian beans display rich chocolate intensity with some bitter notes in the mouthfeel. They serve as excellent foundations for various coffee blends, providing a stable base that allows other distinctive specialty coffees to showcase their unique characteristics.

Brazilian Coffee Industry

Brazil is the world's largest coffee producer, accounting for approximately 30% of global coffee production. However, due to Brazil's location in the tropical rainforest region with relatively flat terrain and few high-altitude mountain forests, most coffee is grown in low-altitude, non-volcanic soil areas without significant shade cover. This results in Brazilian beans growing quickly with large sizes but low density and limited flavor variation. Additionally, large-scale mechanical harvesting collects coffee beans at various maturity levels simultaneously, preventing Brazilian beans from achieving exceptional quality and keeping them in the commercial category.

Rise of Specialty Brazilian Coffee

After 2000, the incentive of coffee competitions led to recognition of high-quality beans produced in southern high-altitude regions, particularly around farms in the Minas highlands. These coffees represent the pinnacle of Brazilian coffee quality and have the highest production volume. Examples include Cerrado in western Minas, Matas de Minas in the east, northern Bahia, and small southern farms. Minas has almost become synonymous with Brazilian specialty coffee.

In recent years, coffee competitions have precisely distinguished processing methods (washed, semi-washed, semi-natural, natural), developing various flavors, mouthfeels, and aftertastes that differ dramatically from traditional Brazilian coffee. Semi-natural and natural processes perform particularly well, offering cleaner cups with lower acidity and enhanced fruit aromas while reducing the intense chocolate notes.
