Introduction of Panamanian Coffee
Coffee was introduced to Panama in 1780, when Europeans brought the first batch of Typica coffee trees. This mysterious and exotic beverage soon conquered the senses of Panamanians, and locals began widespread cultivation. Panamanian coffee is very smooth, with full-bodied beans that are light in weight and have perfect acidity balance. Its high-quality coffee beans feature pure flavors and distinctive characteristics, and medium roasting is recommended. Many buyers like to use Panamanian beans for blends, and almost all high-quality coffee beans are exported to France and Finland.
Geographical Advantages
Panama is the southernmost country in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, Costa Rica to the north, and Colombia to the south—it is an important isthmus connecting North and South America. Under the influence of these geographical factors, Panama has complex and varied microclimates, which also create the unique flavor profile of Panamanian coffee. Panama is roughly divided into four producing regions:
Santa Clara producing region - altitude 1500 meters
Santa Clara Region
The Santa Clara region: Fertile coffee farms are irrigated and nourished by the clear river water from the Chorerra waterfall. Additionally, with its proximity to the Panama Canal, fresh and pure Panamanian coffee can be conveniently transported to all parts of the world.
Located on the border between Panama and Costa Rica, the Santa Clara producing region lies within a series of beautiful valleys and ridges at altitudes of approximately 1,400-1,800 meters, creating different microclimates and giving each micro-lot of specialty green coffee beans its unique character.
The Journey of Specialty Coffee
As time progressed into the modern era, people began to define and understand the different flavors on their taste buds—understanding the beauty of original flavors, the unique characteristics created by microclimates, the knowledge of roast levels, and more. Simultaneously, more estates with professional knowledge and technology emerged. For Panama, the various changes brought about by the specialty coffee wave have been important milestones in gradually connecting Panamanian coffee with the world.
From the establishment and development of the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, many estates and producing regions that were originally limited by small production areas have continuously improved to become high-quality coffee-producing countries specializing in the specialty market. Under the influence of the annual "Best of Panama" auction frenzy, Panama has become synonymous with specialty coffee, and even more so, the ultimate in Geisha coffee!
