Panama's Four Major Coffee Growing Regions
Panama's coffee growing regions are concentrated in the Boquete area of Chiriquí Province. Fertile volcanic soil and microclimates are important factors that make Panama coffee so unique. When discussing Panama's coffee traditions, people are generally more familiar with specialty coffee regions from Boquete, but in recent years, coffee from the Volcán region has been making its mark in the specialty market. Many estates from this region have entered the Best of Panama competition and even won championships. The Volcán region generally has less annual rainfall than Boquete, and its geographical location on the western side of Barú Volcano gives its coffee more intense dried fruit flavors, sweetness, and aroma compared to Boquete. In earlier times, most of the Volcán area was planted with fruits, vegetables, and other cash crops, with only a few farmers growing coffee. Among the pioneers of coffee cultivation in the Volcán region was the Hartmann family, which is quite well-known in Panama.
