Last Updated: 2026/01/27, The Geisha variety was first discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya; it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania in 1936, and to Costa Rica in 1953. Geisha did not receive much attention for many years, until one day when Don Pachi originally brought it from the small town of GESHA in southwestern Ethiopia to Costa Rica.

The Origin of Geisha Coffee

The Geisha variety was discovered in 1931 in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia and subsequently sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. In 1936, it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania, followed by Costa Rica in 1953. For many years, Geisha remained relatively unnoticed until Don Pachi brought it from the small town of GESHA in southwestern Ethiopia to Costa Rica. From there, Geisha made its way southward into Panama. At Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama, it was separated from other varieties and went on to win the national coffee championship.

Distinctive Characteristics

Geisha exhibits full, rich sweetness, an exceptionally clean mouthfeel, and complex aromas that range from berries and citrus notes to mango, papaya, and peach flavors. A distinctly noticeable bergamot-like aftertaste is also one of its typical cupping characteristics. To this day, Geisha remains the champion among coffee varieties.

About Morgan Estate

Morgan Estate is located southwest of Volcán Barú, Panama's highest peak. The estate covers approximately five hectares, with an average of 2,000 coffee trees per hectave. Due to growing characteristics and cultivation philosophy, only some coffee trees produce coffee cherries each season. The coffee cherries undergo meticulous selection and processing, with only small quantities of coffee beans reaching the market.

Morgan Estate is influenced by both Atlantic and Pacific monsoon climates, creating diverse and variable microclimates within the estate. The significant temperature difference between day and night slows the maturation of coffee cherries, allowing for more complete development and enhanced sweetness. Due to the high altitude, the estate's terrain is predominantly mountainous, with coffee planted on steep slopes, which increases the difficulty of tree management and cherry harvesting. In terms of tree management, if a tree is found to be affected by pests, the entire tree is removed and the soil is renewed to prevent disease spread and protect other healthy coffee trees.

This practice has kept Morgan Estate's green bean prices at a high level in the market, with customers primarily being competition baristas in the coffee industry. These top baristas believe that whether a coffee can become exceptional is determined when it's still a green bean or even a seed. For example, Geisha from Morgan Estate is destined for an extraordinary cup from the moment it's a green bean.

Additional Information

Geisha is pronounced the same as the Japanese word "geisha," which is why it's also known as Geisha coffee. Because the tree variety is taller than typical coffee trees, it was originally planted in a small area within the estate and used as a windbreak. The owner's son, wanting to participate in the annual Best of Panama coffee competition, tested all coffee tree varieties throughout the estate, giving Geisha its opportunity to shine. It has since participated in various international coffee competitions, winning a total of eleven championships.
