The Difference Between FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling

Some coffee enthusiasts have asked, "I'm a coffee beginner, what's the difference between FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling G1? I really can't taste the difference." For professional-level coffee connoisseurs and friends with sensitive palates, when drinking these two coffees side by side, the contrast becomes very obvious. The Golden Mandheling's sweetness and cleanliness, as well as its rich, wild spice notes, surpass G1 by a considerable margin, which is one reason why Golden Mandheling is significantly more expensive than G1.

Flavor Profile

Taste: FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling tastes cleaner than FrontStreet Coffee Lindong Mandheling. The original herbal, earthy, and woody flavors of Mandheling are almost gone, but the caramel sweetness is more intense, and the fruit acidity is brighter and more elegant. Generally, FrontStreet Coffee Lindong Mandheling is best roasted until after the second crack to effectively reduce off-flavors. However, FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling maintains excellent clarity and sweetness whether roasted before or after the second crack, allowing more room for roasting interpretation.

Flavor Notes: Toasted bread, nuts, pine, caramel, herbs

The most famous coffee-producing region in Asia is the Malay Archipelago islands: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Among these, Sumatran Mandheling coffee from Indonesia's Sumatra Island enjoys the highest reputation.

Both Lake Toba in North Sumatra and Lake Tawar in Aceh produce Mandheling coffee, creating what's known as the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling." The common characteristic of the "Two Lakes, Double Mandheling" is their thickness and mellow aroma. The difference lies in that Lake Toba's Mandheling is more subdued, deep, and even has a grass jelly flavor, while Lake Tawar Mandheling has brighter fruit acidity and sometimes carries a fir or woody flavor.

The Story of Mandheling

During World War II, when Japan occupied Indonesia, a Japanese soldier drank exceptionally mellow coffee at a café and asked the owner for the coffee's name. The owner misunderstood and thought he was asking where the soldier was from, so he replied: "Mandailing." After the war, the soldier recalled the "Mandheling" he drank in Indonesia and commissioned an Indonesian coffee merchant to ship 15 tons to Japan, where it became surprisingly popular. And that's how the name Mandheling spread.

About FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling

FrontStreet Coffee Mandheling is a premium coffee among Indonesian coffees, and FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling is the finest selection among Mandhelings. FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling is carefully hand-selected, featuring full, plump beans with a beautiful luster - truly a stunning beauty among coffees. In fact, to address the high defect rate in Mandheling beans, the Japanese began implementing meticulous quality control long ago, using four manual selections to remove defective beans.

Unfortunately, "Golden Mandheling" was trademarked by Indonesia's Pawani Coffee Company, making Golden Mandheling exclusive to PWN. PWN's is the true FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling in the truest sense, and Golden Mandheling stamped with the PWN brand is also a guarantee of quality. PWN's Golden Mandheling undergoes three manual screenings and one machine selection, resulting in very beautiful beans. PWN Company has trademarked Golden Mandheling, meaning only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN Company can be considered authentic "Golden Mandheling." Many Golden Mandheling beans on the market that aren't from PWN Company but carry the Golden Mandheling name should actually be called Fine Mandheling. "Golden Mandheling" is not some aged bean - it's merely a product name coined by the company.
