Kenya Washed AA Grade Kirinyaga Kabare Kongyu Factory Single Origin Specialty Coffee
Kenya Kongyu AA - A Gentle Breeze by the Sea
This batch of Kenya Kongyu AA coffee cherries was harvested and processed by 250 farmers from the Kongyu processing station, under the Kabare Farmers Cooperative Society. After being pulped, fermented, and washed using water from the nearby Kongyu River, the coffee is dried on African raised beds. Each harvest season, farmers process nearly 300 tons of coffee cherries. Once processed, the coffee participates in Nairobi's weekly Wednesday coffee auctions, and when selected by licensed exporters, it is shipped to consumer markets worldwide.
In previous Kenyan coffees, we particularly sought those with angular, powerful fruit acidity. However, this particular Kenyan coffee brought me a sense of gentleness, like facing the sea with a gentle breeze caressing your face.
Flavor Profile
Intense lemon and plum aromas in both dry and wet fragrance. When light-roasted and sipped, it reveals stunning floral and lemon aromas, along with flavors reminiscent of grapefruit green tea and citrus juice - sweet, tart, and juicy. With a slightly darker roast, notes of honey and raspberry-black plum emerge, while the aftertaste presents the delightful sweet-tart flavor of green tea.

Kenya: The Birthplace of Exceptional Coffee
Located in East Africa, Kenya is one of the world's major coffee-producing countries, with approximately six million people engaged in the coffee industry, mostly in the form of smallholders and cooperatives.
Kenyan coffee trees are primarily grown at altitudes between 1,400-2,000 meters, with growing regions including Ruiri, Thika, Kirinyaga, Mt. Kenya West, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Muranga, mainly on the foothills of Mt. Kenya and Aberdare.
Many of Kenya's growing regions strive to preserve native forest ecosystems, protecting natural gene banks, supporting wild coffee varieties' propagation, and nurturing diverse coffee trees.
It was in this favorable environment that Kenya's unique varieties SL28 and SL34 were cultivated and named in 1930 by the "Scott Laboratories" research institute.
According to botanists at the SL laboratory, SL28 and SL34 are genetic variants. Among them, SL28 possesses mixed lineage from French missionaries, Mocha, and Yemen Typica. The original goal in developing SL28 was to mass-produce coffee beans that combined high quality with disease and pest resistance.
Although SL28's later yields didn't meet mass production expectations, its copper-colored leaves and broad bean shape deliver wonderful sweetness, balance, and complex, varied flavors, along with distinctive citrus and black plum characteristics. Meanwhile, SL34 shares similar flavor profiles with SL28 but, in addition to complex, varied acidity and excellent sweet finish, has a heavier, more intense, and cleaner mouthfeel than SL28. SL34 possesses French missionary, Bourbon, and more Typica lineage. While similar in appearance to SL28, it adapts better to sudden heavy rains. These two important varieties have led us to understand the unique Kenyan style: intense, rich fruit acidity, full body, and beautiful balance.
This Kenyan coffee comes from the Kongyu processing station of the Kabare Cooperative Society in Kenya's Kirinyaga region, processed using the Kenyan double-washed method. Grown on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya in the Manyatta-Embu County at 1550-1750 meters altitude, it features the classic Kenyan varieties SL28 and SL34. Combined with the local significant day-night temperature differences and Kenya's red phosphoric soil, sweet and tart flavors have become the primary flavor profile of this Kenyan coffee.
