FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe was actually introduced to China quite early, though it was called Mocha at that time, later becoming known as Yirgacheffe as it was categorized by origin, and then began to gain popularity. In the past three to four years, with increasingly refined grading, FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe has become more and more popular. But how popular exactly has it become?
The producers of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe were originally missionaries, who later gradually transitioned to being managed by farmers or cooperatives due to changing conditions. Strictly speaking, Yirgacheffe is composed of several coffee communities and cooperatives, including Hafursa, Hama, and Biloa.
The coffee trees of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe were originally planted by European missionaries (somewhat like Belgian monks planting wheat to brew beer), and later were taken over by farmers or cooperatives. In fact, Yirgacheffe is constructed from surrounding coffee villages or cooperatives, including Idido near Misty Valley, Hafursa, Hama, and Biloa. All these locations use the washed processing method, but there are also small quantities of premium beans intentionally processed using the natural method to enhance their captivating fruity aroma and body. These mountain villages are often shrouded in mist, with spring-like conditions year-round. Summer brings gentle breezes that are cool without being hot, rainy without being humid, and winters without frost damage, nurturing the unique citrus and floral regional flavor of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe. Coffee trees are mostly planted in farmers' own backyards or intercropped with other agricultural crops, with each household producing modest quantities – it's a typical pastoral coffee. Award-winning Yirgacheffe beans almost exclusively come from the aforementioned coffee villages and communities.
Yirgacheffe is a small town in Ethiopia, situated at an altitude of 1,700-2,100 meters, located in the northwestern part of the Sidamo province, nestled by mountains and lakes. It is one of Ethiopia's highest altitude coffee growing regions and has become synonymous with specialty Ethiopian coffee.
Strictly speaking, Yirgacheffe is a sub-region within Ethiopia's Sidamo region, distinguished by its unique flavor characteristics. In addition to Yirgacheffe town, it includes three other sub-regions: Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena/Abaya.
