American Coffee Machine Grind Coarseness Water Ratio Temperature Parameter Introduction Espresso Coffee Making Techniques
"Can I make espresso at home? I want to make my own Americano!" Of course you can! Coffee made with a moka pot can also be considered a type of espresso, but if you compare it with espresso made by an espresso machine, the concentration is definitely not as high. If you make it into an Americano, you just need to use a slightly lower ratio when adding water~
Americano is not necessarily espresso diluted with water!
With Starbucks coming to China, Americano was immediately popularized, so in many people's minds, Americano = espresso diluted with water. In fact, Americano refers to black coffee with a relatively low concentration. Because people in the United States prefer less intense black coffee, those lighter black coffees are called Americano, also known as American coffee.
How to make Americano at home?
Many people want to make Americano at home, but are hesitant because they don't have an espresso machine. No problem! FrontStreet Coffee recommends two devices for making Americano in this article, both of which are very suitable for home/office purchase! One is the moka pot, and the other is the drip Americano coffee machine.
The moka pot is a device that uses the siphon principle to draw boiling water from the lower chamber up through steam pressure, passing through the middle chamber containing coffee grounds, and then overflowing from the middle pipe into the upper chamber. When using a moka pot to make coffee, the coffee needs to be ground into very fine powder~ How fine? As long as the coffee grounds don't pass through the filter holes of the grounds chamber, you can grind it as fine as possible~
The amount of coffee grounds and water needed to brew coffee with a moka pot should refer to the grounds chamber of the pot itself and the height of the pressure relief valve in the lower chamber! FrontStreet Coffee suggests filling the coffee beans into the grounds chamber until it's full and level with the chamber, then grinding the coffee beans in the chamber into very fine powder~ The amount of water used is generally best added to a height of 0.5cm below the pressure relief valve. The water added should be hot water or just-boiled water, which can shorten the time it takes for the moka pot to brew coffee and reduce the situation of over-extraction. (Note that the moka pot itself is not insulated, so it needs to be handled with insulation after adding hot water and after brewing is complete). Then add an appropriate amount of clean water until it suits your taste~
The operation of the drip coffee machine is even simpler! The drip coffee machine consists of an automatic water injection pipe, a filter pot, and a lower pot. We only need to pour coffee grounds ground to the size of fine sugar into the filter pot with special filter paper, put on the lid, press the switch, and wait for a few minutes to have a cup of coffee with suitable concentration. The amount of grounds used by the drip coffee machine can be based on the amount recommended in the instructions~ If you think the resulting coffee is still too strong, you can add an appropriate amount of water; if you think it's too weak, you can add a little more coffee grounds.
What's the difference in taste between Americano made with moka pot and drip coffee machine?
Using the same FrontStreet Coffee Brazil Queen's Estate coffee beans, the Americano made with a moka pot will be very rich, with a peanut butter-like aroma and smoothness, and a dark cocoa-like aftertaste. However, due to the poor filtering performance of the moka pot, the coffee has a slight gritty taste when drinking. The Americano made by the drip coffee machine will be much fresher and cleaner, with an overall full and refreshing taste, nutty aroma, peanut butter smoothness, and caramel-like aftertaste, with more obvious flavor layers.
