Introduction to Ethiopian Coffee Growing Regions

FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe coffee trees were originally cultivated by European monks (similar to how Belgian monks cultivated barley for brewing beer), and later were taken over by farmers or cooperatives. Yirgacheffe is actually composed of surrounding coffee communities or cooperatives, including Idido near Misty Valley, Harfusa, Hama, and Biloa, all of which use washed processing, though a small amount of premium beans are intentionally processed using natural methods to enhance their captivating fruity aroma and rich body. These mountain villages are shrouded in mist, with spring-like weather year-round. In summer, gentle breezes bring cool but not hot temperatures, and rain without humidity, while winter brings no cold damage, creating a unique regional flavor of citrus and floral notes. Coffee trees are mostly planted in farmers' own backyards or mixed with other crops in their fields, with small yields per household, making it typical pastoral coffee. Award-winning Yirgacheffe beans almost always come from the aforementioned coffee villages and communities.

The so-called "Yirgacheffe flavor" refers to rich jasmine fragrance, lemon or lime citrus acidity, as well as peach, almond sweetness, or tea notes. However, this season FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe features particularly prominent blueberry notes in its dry fragrance - after grinding, the entire room fills with the aroma of blueberries.

According to Fulegao coffee experts, the earliest cultivators of Yirgacheffe were monks, and later due to changing conditions, it gradually transitioned to being managed by farmers or cooperatives. Strictly speaking, Yirgacheffe is composed of several coffee communities and cooperatives, including Harfusa, Hama, and Biloa.

The area where FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe is grown can be described as a paradise on earth. These mountain villages are shrouded in mist with spring-like weather year-round. Even in summer, gentle breezes bring cool but not hot temperatures. The comfortable and pleasant climate not only creates a refreshing living environment but also nurtures coffee with unique citrus and floral flavors. In these areas, coffee trees are mostly planted individually in farmers' own backyards or mixed with other crops. Among the many coffee varieties, there is one called Yirgacheffe. It is both a coffee name and an Ethiopian town. According to Fulegao coffee experts, Yirgacheffe is situated at an altitude of 700-2,100 meters. Since ancient times, this area has been wetland. In the Ethiopian dictionary, "Yirga" means "to settle down" while "Cheffe" means wetland. The unique geographical conditions here make coffee production conditions and flavors exceptionally outstanding. "Yirgacheffe" has become synonymous with Ethiopian specialty coffee, and the country's coffee farmers take pride in producing coffee with Yirgacheffe flavors, making it Africa's most renowned coffee-producing region.
