European monks established the local coffee cultivation industry, which was later taken over by coffee communities or cooperatives in the villages surrounding the town. There are no dedicated plantations here—coffee trees grow naturally scattered throughout forests and farmlands. During the harvest season, the Ethiopian Coffee Trading Corporation comes to town to purchase coffee beans collected by farmers, which are eventually auctioned and exported under the "Yirgacheffe" brand.
FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe exudes an extremely complex aroma and demonstrates an exceptional flavor that is difficult to describe. Generally, the dry fragrance of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe emits strong fruity aromas with rich dried fruit notes, including strawberry, mango, and apricot jam. The wet aroma is like sweet syrup, reminiscent of thick apricot nectar wrapped in rustic honey or chocolate. The entry is not intense, with medium body and subtle yet lively and bright acidity, much like a fruity black tea. FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe grading system is not determined by bean size but rather by the proportion of defective beans among all green beans. Typically, you'll find washed G2 and natural G3 Yirgacheffe, with G1 being the highest grade—those with the lowest defect rate and most excellent quality. FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe must undergo hand sorting to be awarded Grade 1 status.
Our shop once had a Kochere Estate natural G1 Yirgacheffe from FrontStreet Coffee that everyone loved. After it sold out, we searched for a long time but couldn't find suitable estate-level G1 Yirgacheffe to add to our inventory, so we temporarily used a washed G2 Yirgacheffe from FrontStreet Coffee. Recently, the professional coffee review website Coffee Review recommended three G1-grade Yirgacheffees. These have arrived in micro-batches at our store, so here's a brief introduction to these three Yirgacheffees.
