Hacienda La Esmeralda made its name with the Geisha variety. The Geisha variety was discovered in 1931 in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia and later sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. It was subsequently introduced to Uganda, Tanzania, and Costa Rica, where it showed mediocre performance. It wasn't until it was transplanted to Panama in the 1960s that it made a spectacular breakthrough after nearly half a century. In 2005, 2006, and 2007, it defeated varieties like Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica at BOP (Best of Panama), winning three consecutive championships. In 2007, Geisha won the International Cupping Competition hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), with a bidding price of $130 per pound, setting the highest price record for competition beans in history. Geisha belongs to the Typica family and grew into the king of coffees on Panamanian soil after leaving Ethiopia. It conquered palates with its rich floral and fruity aromas and transparent, bright acidity.
Panama has appeared among the world's best coffee-producing countries for the past three years, surprising countries that have been at the forefront of coffee production for many years. Panama's main coffee-growing regions are in the west, bordering Costa Rica, producing premium washed process coffees. Compared to coffee beans grown in low and medium altitude areas, the low temperatures and stable climate of Panama's high-altitude regions are more beneficial to coffee bean growth. Coffee beans grown here develop slowly, possessing the most intense and distinctive flavors, with the hardest coffee density.

In 1925, Canadian fruit merchant Alexander Duncan MacIntyre, inspired by his brother Joseph, came to settle in Boquete. In the same year, he married Angela Rosas and purchased an estate named "LA CAROLINA," beginning coffee cultivation. Their descendants still own this estate today, which has become one of the most famous coffee estates in the region.
In fact, Panama-produced coffee has never received the recognition and attention it deserves in the specialty coffee market. Good Panama coffee has often been used by unscrupulous merchants to counterfeit Hawaiian Kona coffee or even Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. Panama coffee generally falls in the low to medium price range, but its performance in the cup often rivals that of world-famous and even extremely expensive coffee origins.
