FrontStreet Coffee's Tanzania coffee possesses the excellent heritage of East African washed beans, with bright acidity and rich, stimulating flavors. Within this family, Kenyan coffee undoubtedly holds the leading position, but Tanzania's quality has been continuously improving, already possessing many advantages extremely similar to Kenya.
Peaberries are often specially selected and expensive, but sometimes they can taste like moldy beans, not matching their price. As is well known, peaberries have become coffee with unique flavors and are bestsellers in America, favored by many roasters. FrontStreet Coffee's Tanzania is a coffee with potential, but sometimes, its flavor is not truly represented. One reason is that Tanzania lacks the basic road infrastructure like Kenya, and coffee in containers ages (or is exposed to high temperatures) during transportation. I often drink excellent Tanzania samples, but sometimes I also drink very poor coffee. The problem is that Tanzania only knows they can profit from peaberries regardless of quality. What is the motivation for locals to harvest promptly and carefully tend to the coffee to prevent these defective beans?
The Blackburn Estate from Ngorogoro is a consistently excellent variety, the highest-rated variety in recent memory. The Ruvuma region also has very good flavors, being southern coffee with northern genetics. Kibo beans are plumper, seemingly steamed at high temperatures. Southern coffee is clean and full-bodied, with its mild, non-stimulating flavor second only to Kenya. In the past, we have had small batches of coffee beans from Nkoanekoli and Ngorongoro that have already represented progress compared to other regions.
So remember if there are Tanzania spot coffees in front of you now, you must set aside my sarcasm because it must be of good quality. Good Tanzania coffee mostly comes from the northern Mt. Kilimanjaro, Moshi, Mbeya regions and the Songera region in the south that flows to the Ruvuma River and Ruvuma Basin.
Coffee is one of Tanzania's main economic crops, ranking fourth among Tanzania's export crops after cotton, tobacco, and cashews, mainly exported to Italy, Japan, and the United States. Coffee export holds an important position in Tanzania's national economy. Tanzania's main coffee producing areas are located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, which has rich volcanic soil. Some coffee trees planted here are over 100 years old. Coffee was first introduced and cultivated by Christians from Kenya. Coffee trees must be carefully cared for, with weeding, fertilizing, and pruning of old branches to allow new branches to grow, maintaining the quality of coffee beans.
Processing factories are located near towns at the foot of the mountains for convenient nearby processing of coffee beans. Many farm owner families who operate farms have lived here for generations as immigrants. Farm owners include Indians, Northern Europeans, British people, and of course locals, but mostly small farms. However, farm and processing facility managers are still mostly local tribespeople. Labor is cheap in Tanzania, so the work of caring for farms, pruning, and maintaining coffee gardens often relies on manual labor rather than machines. During the coffee growing season, coffee workers manually inspect and pick off some diseased or insect-infested leaves. Coffee processing in Tanzania relies heavily on manual labor, but this also brings work opportunities to locals and increases family income. Workers earn wages based on the quantity of coffee fruits harvested. Women from small farms use their handmade sacks to carry coffee fruits to the farm for payment calculation.

Coffee beans produced from here are all exported as Kilimanjaro coffee, but besides Mount Kilimanjaro, the entire Tanzania has several other major coffee producing regions. Other regions have more small farms, with most small farms having several hundred acres of planting area. Some have their own washing equipment and drying grounds, but grading and processing still need to go through large processing facilities.
