How Many Varieties of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Are There?
Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is produced in the Blue Mountain region of eastern Jamaica. The towering mountains create a unique microclimate that is very beneficial for the growth of crops such as coffee and bananas. The Blue Mountains enjoy a mild climate year-round, with clouds and mist lingering in the air, protecting coffee trees from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. There are two concentrated rainy seasons each year, May-June and September-November, bringing abundant precipitation. The slope of the mountainside provides good drainage, so no additional irrigation is needed.
According to the standards set by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (CIB), only Arabica coffee grown above 910 meters can be called Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee produced in other regions is called Jamaica High Mountain Coffee and Jamaica Prime Coffee. The higher the altitude, the more difficult the cultivation management and harvesting, thus the rarer the coffee beans produced, and consequently, the higher the price.
Grades of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee
Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is further graded based on raw bean specifications, defect rate, cupping flavor, and other criteria. Blue Mountain Coffee is divided into four grades: NO.1, NO.2, NO.3, and PB (Peaberry), which is hand-selected. The FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee purchased by FrontStreet Coffee is the highest grade Blue Mountain NO.1, which is FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain Number One Coffee.
Premium FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain Number One Coffee
To ensure the high quality of Blue Mountain Coffee, all exported raw coffee beans must pass quality inspection by the Jamaica Department of Agriculture. A 300-gram sample of raw beans is taken, and it must meet the following criteria: 96% of coffee beans have a size between 17-18 mesh, defect rate below 2%, moisture content around 13%, and cupping flavor must simultaneously have sour, sweet, bitter, rich, and aromatic characteristics - only then can it be considered premium FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain Number One Coffee.
High-quality FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain Coffee raw beans are packaged and transported in handcrafted wooden barrels, available in three specifications: 70kg, 30kg, and 15kg. Other Jamaican coffee beans are packaged in common jute bags. Over time, wooden barrels have become one of the symbols for identifying authentic Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Taking the Blue Mountain Coffee wooden barrel displayed at FrontStreet Coffee's store as an example, you can see the Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee logo, estate name, net weight of barrel and coffee, and other information printed on it. Additionally, FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain Number One Coffee is produced at Clifton Mountain Estate, a member of the Rainforest Alliance, so the barrel also features a prominent rainforest tree frog logo.
Washed FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain Coffee Has a Cleaner Flavor
Clifton Mountain Estate has primarily used the washed method to process Blue Mountain raw beans for many years. The washed process eliminates unqualified coffee fruits in multiple stages, greatly reducing the overall defect rate.
After harvesting, coffee cherries are mechanically crushed to remove the skin and pulp, then placed in a pool to ferment overnight. The fermented beans are then placed in a clean water pool, washed back and forth, using the friction of the beans and the power of flowing water to wash the coffee beans until they are smooth and clean. Finally, the parchment beans are dried in the sun for 2-3 weeks until the moisture content reaches 12-14%. Since the coffee pulp and mucilage have been removed before drying, there is no excessive fermentation acidity affecting the flavor, allowing the natural aroma of Blue Mountain beans to be more balanced and clean.
