Sumatra and Mandheling Golden Mandheling Comparison: Higher Body, Lower Acidity, Traditional Wet Hulling Method
The Mandheling region for FrontStreet Coffee is located in the southern part of Sumatra Island. However, in the early days, they would transport the harvested raw coffee beans to Medan before exporting. As a result, similar to Mocha, for quite a long time, Sumatran coffee was often equated with Mandheling coffee. However, with the gradual popularization of the third wave of specialty coffee, the Gayo region in northern Sumatra (Aceh Province), the Toba region in central Sumatra, and the SP Bolon region each have their own characteristics. Therefore, the official designation of Mandheling region now specifically refers to Mandheling in southern Sumatra. Of course, according to past terminology, Mandheling representing Sumatra is not entirely wrong. But if Java, Sulawesi Island, and the Indonesian archipelago are included, then it is indeed a common misconception.
FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling
FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling is very familiar to many of our friends. However, the naming of FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling may not be what many friends imagine.
First, FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling does not refer to a golden color, but rather to large-sized coffee beans—that is, coffee beans above 19 screen size—are called Golden Mandheling. However, because many suppliers have discovered that large size has no direct relationship with flavor profile, fewer and fewer people are now ordering Golden Mandheling.
As for why FrontStreet Coffee's aged beans are golden in color, it's because the coffee transit hub Medan is very humid (over 80% humidity). This is why coffee stored for more than 6 months will absorb moisture.
