FrontStreet Coffee · Introduction to Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee Grades

Jamaican law stipulates that only coffee beans grown in the Blue Mountain region can be called Blue Mountain coffee.

High-grade Blue Mountain coffee is divided into three grades: No. 1 (17-18 mesh and above), No. 2 (16 mesh), and No. 3 (15 mesh). 17 mesh corresponds to a size of 17/64 inches.

Their taste profiles (all confirmed through cupping by government-certified professionals) are identical, differing only in size.

Green beans from these three grades must be packed in wooden barrels for export, available in three specifications: 70kg/barrel, 30kg/barrel, and 15kg/barrel.

The barrel will be printed with the name of the producing farm, the English abbreviation of the importer's name, and each shipment's batch number and arrival port name.

For example, the diamond-shaped logo on Blue Mountain coffee barrels imported by Shanghai Jialumeng Coffee Company's Japanese parent company ATAKA Trading Co., Ltd. contains the abbreviation ATC.

Meanwhile, the diamond-shaped logo on Blue Mountain coffee barrels imported by Japan's Ueshima Coffee Company contains the abbreviation UCC.

Therefore, when you see a Blue Mountain coffee barrel, you can identify which farm in Jamaica's Blue Mountains it came from, who the importer is, and which port it arrived at.

At the same time, Jamaican exporters will provide importers with a green certificate of origin.

This government-recognized certificate of origin is only issued to importers who purchase in whole barrel units (70kg/barrel, 30kg/barrel, 15kg/barrel).

It records the exporting estate's name, importer's name, that year's harvest, quantity, grade number, batch number, arrival port name, and other details.

(Among green coffee beans produced outside Jamaica's Blue Mountain region, only High Mountain coffee beans are packed in wooden barrels.)

Lower Grade Coffee Processing

Next, there are defective beans and beans of uneven sizes that may not look appealing on the surface but have acceptable taste profiles.

Jamaican government regulations require these green beans to be packed only in gunny sacks for export.

Even worse are coffees with flavor defects.

Jamaican government regulations strictly prohibit such coffees from being exported as green beans.

They can only be exported after being roasted locally in Jamaica and must be dark roasted.

Because only dark roasting can mask or eliminate flavor defects.

However, the advantages of Blue Mountain coffee are perfectly displayed only when lightly roasted.

Therefore, if you buy small-packaged Blue Mountain coffee directly imported from Jamaica in domestic stores that is dark roasted, it represents the lowest grade of Blue Mountain coffee, but at least it is still authentic Blue Mountain coffee.
