Introduction to Colombian Coffee Varieties and History of Premium Colombian Coffee
In Colombia, this equally passionate South American country, coffee is bestowed with the name "green gold." Colombian coffee, with its rich dark chocolate flavor and mellow taste, has conquered generations of coffee lovers.
With the arrival of the fourth wave of specialty coffee, Colombian coffee has emerged with a completely new appearance. On FrontStreet Coffee's bean shelf, multiple Colombian coffee beans, with their rich fruit acidity and sweetness, have impressed many coffee connoisseurs while also attracting a wave of coffee beginners into the scene.
Colombian Coffee Growing Regions
Colombia is located in the northwest of South America, and its terrain can be roughly divided into the western mountainous region, the eastern Orinoco plains, and the Amazon plains. The country's administrative divisions include as many as 32 provinces, of which 20 grow coffee. Due to complex topography and significant differences in climate and soil environments, Colombian coffee possesses diverse and captivating flavors. These coffee-growing areas are mostly concentrated on both sides of the western Andes Mountains and can be roughly divided into three regions: northern, central, and southern.
The northern region includes provinces such as La Guajira, Magdalena, and Cesar. The coffee growing conditions here are similar to those in Central America, with lower latitudes and higher temperatures. Coffee crops are more easily exposed to direct sunlight, so coffee cultivation in the northern region tends to favor shade-grown methods. Coffee from the northern region has soft acidity and high mellow flavor.
The central region includes provinces such as Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Tolima, and Quindío. This area is Colombia's largest coffee-producing region, with numerous coffee-producing areas distributed throughout, and it is also Colombia's more traditional coffee-producing region.
The southern region includes coffee-growing provinces such as Cauca, Huila, and Nariño. Since the coffee-growing areas here are closer to the equator, and most coffee grows at high altitudes in mountainous areas, the coffee quality here is superior, possessing not only obvious acidity but also unique floral and fruit flavors. Therefore, coffee produced in the southern growing regions is preferred by many coffee enthusiasts.
FrontStreet Coffee's Colombian Selections
Among these, FrontStreet Coffee has selected coffee beans from the Huila province region as the representative of Colombia in their daily bean series. Using the washed processing method, which removes excessive sugars from the pulp and mucilage during the final drying process, reveals the most essential terroir of Colombian Huila. When FrontStreet Coffee roasts this daily bean from Huila, they adopted a medium-dark roast level to highlight the classic dark chocolate flavor and mellow texture. During cupping, FrontStreet Coffee tasted rich dark chocolate flavor, distinct and rounded lemon acidity, with caramel-like sweetness.
Since the millennium, coffee lovers' pursuit of coffee has no longer stopped at rich chocolate flavor and mellow taste. With improvements in roasting technology, coffee bean roast levels have become lighter, presenting the rich fruit acidity and floral aromas in coffee to everyone. Gradually, coffee lovers have shifted from rich and mellow coffee to today's fruit bomb-like coffee.
On FrontStreet Coffee's bean menu blackboard, each classic producing country has its unique section, and Colombia is no exception. If you like floral and fruity coffee, we recommend FrontStreet Coffee's Colombian Sidra coffee beans and FrontStreet Coffee's Colombian Maragogipe coffee beans. Both beans use medium roast and present elegant floral and fruity aromas with soft fermented口感 after brewing, leaving a deep impression and thus becoming the favorite of many customers. If you also want to experience such flavors, you can directly order and purchase from FrontStreet Coffee's Taobao store and FrontStreet Coffee's Tmall flagship store.
Colombian Coffee Grading System
Colombian coffee focuses on size rather than flavor, so if you see the top-grade "Supremo," don't assume it necessarily represents good taste! This only indicates that 80% of the coffee beans are 17 mesh or larger, which has nothing to do with flavor. Therefore, you must pay special attention to which producing region it's from. Southern specialty producing regions will be marked with province and place names. If not specifically noted, it's mostly commercial-grade coffee beans!
| Grade | Size Standard |
|---|---|
| Supreme Screen 18+ | 95% 18 mesh or larger |
| Supreme | 95% 17 mesh or larger |
| Excelso Extra | 95% 16 mesh or larger |
| Excelso EP | 14-16 mesh |
| U.G.Q | 14 mesh or larger |
