Ethiopia has eight main coffee producing regions: Ekempti, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. Yirgacheffe is located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia. This area governs the well-known Yirgacheffe and Kochere regions. Due to the special and unique flavor profile of Yirgacheffe coffee, which is widely loved, it has established its own category in the premium coffee market worldwide, always maintaining a significant position.
Yirgacheffe itself is a small town in the Sidama province, with three neighboring small producing areas: Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya. Because the flavor of coffee produced in these areas is almost identical to Yirgacheffe and runs parallel to it, Kochere is also classified within the Yirgacheffe regional category. In November 2009, Ethiopia implemented a new trading and grading system, establishing the Commodity Exchange (ECX), where coffee and other agricultural products are publicly auctioned through this official institution. In addition to Yirgacheffe, three sub-regions were added: Wenago, Kochere, and Genlena Abaya, indicating that the flavors of these three regions are extremely refined and can be further subdivided.
Since the implementation of the ECX system in 2008, most raw coffee beans have been sold through this auction system. However, cooperatives are not subject to this regulation; they can directly negotiate, price, and export with buyers.
Dama Cooperative
Dama Cooperative is one of the 26 member cooperatives of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (YCFCU). YCFCU currently represents over 50,000 coffee farmers belonging to more than 300,000 families. It was established in June 2002, and all 26 member cooperatives are located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia, which is a very famous and important coffee-producing area in Ethiopia.
Dama Cooperative consists of 1,728 male and 237 female small-scale coffee farmer family members, located in the Yirgacheffe producing area. It was established in 1979 and joined the YCFCU cooperative union in 2002. These small-scale coffee farmers have an average coffee cultivation area of less than 4 hectares, with cultivation altitudes of approximately 1800-2200 meters. The main coffee varieties are a mix of Typica and local Heirloom.
Every one to two years, cooperative members conduct elections to select an executive committee. The executive committee members can make decisions on purchasing new equipment, exchanging business information among members, and determining payment methods for transactions. Additionally, YCFCU assigns professional managers to cooperatives to provide guidance and advice on harvesting and production processes, thereby increasing yield and improving quality.
The establishment of cooperatives allows farmers under their umbrella to avoid exploitation by buyers at low prices. When facing economic difficulties, cooperatives can also provide loan assistance. This brings considerable positive benefits to both farmers and coffee production.
