The Unique Characteristics of FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya

FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya coffee features distinctive fruit aromas and fruit acidity, with flavors of blackberry and grapefruit, complemented by a hint of wine-like fragrance in its rich body. When lightly roasted, FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya showcases bright fruit notes and acidity that have been compared to fruit tea, highlighting its unique flavor profile. Among these, FrontStreet Coffee's renowned Kenya AA grade offers full-bodied, rich flavors that have earned widespread acclaim.

Cultivation and Harvesting

Kenya coffee is primarily grown on the slopes near Mount Kenya, at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,100 meters. This altitude is ideal for developing the coffee beans' flavor characteristics. The cooler mountain temperatures slow growth, allowing aromatic compounds to fully develop, resulting in more pronounced fruit acidity and harder bean density. FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya exclusively uses Arabica varieties, primarily processed through the washed method, with common cultivars including Bourbon, Typica, Kents, and Riuri 11.

Coffee trees in Kenya can flower twice a year. Most trees bloom during March and April after the long rainy season, with harvesting continuing from October through the end of the year. Some trees also flower in October or November for harvest the following July. FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya is always hand-picked, with farmers harvesting only ripe red coffee cherries, requiring re-picking of each tree approximately every ten days.

Farm Structure and Quality Control

Kenya's coffee farms fall into two categories: large plantations covering five acres or more, which typically have lower average elevations and produce medium-quality beans; and small farms at higher elevations that produce exceptional Kenya beans. Small farms form the backbone of Kenya's coffee production, with each small farmer producing only 20-70 bags per season and lacking resources to invest in expensive washing facilities.

However, these small farmers demonstrate remarkable solidarity, forming cooperatives of hundreds or thousands of members, with government-funded washing stations. The harvested cherries are sent to these cooperatives for unified processing, with production supervised by the Coffee Board of Kenya (CBK), ensuring rigorous management and consistent quality. Kenya's washed processing technology and high-quality standards have long served as a model among coffee-producing nations.
