What Fruits Pair Well with Iced Americano? How to Make Coffee Shop's Specialty Wampee Fizzy Americano?
Wampee, a fruit that could be described as inconspicuous in appearance, was previously unknown outside of southern China. However, in recent years, thanks to the intense competition among tea and beverage brands, as well as advanced logistics and preservation technology, more and more people in northern regions have had the opportunity to taste this earthy yellow fruit. When FrontStreet Coffee sees students finishing exams and beginning summer vacation, it signals that midsummer has arrived, which means it's once again wampee season.
Compared to dominant-flavored fruits like watermelon, durian, and lychee, wampee typically impresses with its tender flesh, sweet-tart juiciness, and a unique delicate fragrance. Besides eating it fresh, it's also excellent for making summer cold beverages. Wampee iced Americano has become a particularly popular homemade iced coffee recently.
For the combination of wampee and iced Americano, FrontStreet Coffee surprisingly found 3 different preparation methods. Today, we'll test all of them to see which approach tastes best and share some detailed preparation tips.
Plan A: Original Wampee Sparkling Americano
Although wampee has a fresh fruity aroma, it's ultimately more sour than sweet, sometimes even slightly bitter. Therefore, when making iced Americano, many people add a small amount of sugar to balance its stimulating acidity, making the coffee more palatable. For the base, FrontStreet Coffee believes that sparkling water provides more layered complexity to fruit juice-style coffees compared to regular water. It both enhances the fruit aroma and adds a refreshing quality to the coffee.
First, wash fresh wampees, remove the seeds, and place them with skin and flesh into a shaker. Use a muddler to crush them to release juice (make sure to crush the flesh and skin thoroughly to extract the flavors), then add 15g of syrup.
Next, pour 150g of original sparkling water into the shaker, close the lid, and shake back and forth or stir with a long spoon several times. The goal is to distribute the syrup evenly throughout the sparkling water.
Now for the iced Americano preparation: Prepare a 300ml coffee cup, fill with 90g of ice cubes, and pour the mixed wampee sparkling water into the cup. You can reserve some of the fruit skin and pulp to enhance flavor.
For the coffee component, we still use FrontStreet Coffee's standard Sunflower Warm Sunshine espresso blend. Extract 40g of coffee liquid from 20g of coffee grounds in 31 seconds, then gently pour over the ice cubes floating on top to complete.
Plan B: Jasmine Tea Wampee Americano
Since wampee has a sweet-tart flavor when eaten alone and makes refreshing, thirst-quenching beverages that are especially suitable for summer when appetite is poor, many people like to pair it with beverages featuring delicate aromas. Jasmine tea is the most popular choice. Although FrontStreet Coffee couldn't find the exact origin of this combination, it's the most frequently replicated version among all wampee Americanos.
Considering that jasmine tea has a relatively light flavor profile, adding syrup directly can easily cause flavor separation. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee uses homemade wampee jam as the base. The ingredients are quite similar - simply heat fresh wampees (5 pieces) and 25g of rock sugar over low heat until thickened. Stop heating when you can clearly smell the sweet fragrance released by the wampee and sugar, then set aside to cool.
First, brew a pot of jasmine tea. Adjust the concentration and steeping time according to your preference. We recommend using cold brew tea method to avoid extracting bitterness. Prepare a 300ml coffee cup, add 90g of ice cubes and 180g of brewed jasmine tea.
Third, place 2 spoonfuls of wampee jam in an espresso cup. Extract 40g of coffee liquid using 20g of FrontStreet Coffee's Warm Sunshine coffee grounds. Then stir the jam and coffee thoroughly, finally pouring it over the jasmine tea.
Plan C: Wampee Preserved Plum Shaken Iced Americano
As you can tell from the name, the focus of this specialty drink is "shaking." As long as you have the ingredients and a shaker at home, you can easily complete it in a few simple steps. It's worth noting that compared to the first two sweetened versions, FrontStreet Coffee has created this sugar-free version of wampee Americano specifically for those who prefer less sweetness.
Step 1: Prepare 3-4 preserved plums, add 150g of hot water (above 90°C), and place in the refrigerator to steep for more than an hour.
Step 2: Wash 8-10 wampees, remove the seeds, and place them in a shaker. Crush firmly until the fruit aroma is released, then add 90g of ice cubes and the prepared preserved plum water.
Step 3: Extract 40g of coffee liquid using 20g of FrontStreet Coffee's Warm Sunshine blend, also pour into the shaker. Close the lid and start shaking~shaking~ Finally, pour the shaken coffee into a glass to complete. The purpose of this method is to use external force to fully integrate the aromas of coffee, wampee, and preserved plums.
Taste Comparison
Through tasting and comparison, FrontStreet Coffee found that these three wampee Americanos have completely different flavor profiles.
The first method, using only sparkling water, allows you to taste the vanilla cream and berry flavors from the Warm Sunshine espresso blend, as well as wampee's natural fruit aroma. However, the overall flavor is relatively light, and because carbonated beverages naturally have rich foam, once the coffee returns to room temperature, it can easily amplify unpleasant bitterness.
The second cup, using jasmine tea as the base with pre-made jam, didn't achieve good integration of the three components in the glass. Even after stirring, FrontStreet Coffee could barely detect any wampee flavor in the coffee. While not a complete failure, this recipe needs further improvement to be truly enjoyable.
The last coffee, although it might look somewhat like traditional Chinese medicine, was the most surprising one for FrontStreet Coffee. Due to more vigorous shaking, the coffee and wampee achieved excellent integration, with a delicate aroma and sweet aftertaste. With the enhancement of preserved plums, it presents a refreshing sweet-tart sensation that stimulates the palate - definitely worth trying!
