Papua New Guinea Coffee: The "Little Blue Mountain" of Asia

In Asia, there are numerous coffee-producing countries, such as Papua New Guinea, China's Yunnan province, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Among these, Papua New Guinea has earned the nickname "Little Blue Mountain" for cultivating Typica coffee beans originally introduced from Jamaica's Blue Mountains.

Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, part of the Melanesian archipelago, consisting of over 600 islands. It borders Indonesia to the west and is separated from Australia by the sea to the south. The country has a coastline of 8,300 kilometers, with many volcanic islands. The southern part of Papua New Guinea consists of plains and lowlands, while the central region features the central mountain range, with northern mountain ridges running parallel to the range, composed of several separate ridges.

Papua New Guinea landscape

In Papua New Guinea, areas above 1,000 meters elevation have a highland climate, while lower elevation areas have a tropical rainforest climate. The dry season runs from May to October, and the rainy season from November to April. The average temperature in coastal areas ranges from 21°C to 32°C, while mountainous areas are 5-6°C cooler. The average annual rainfall is 2,500 millimeters. Located near the equator with suitable climate, abundant rainfall, and volcanic soil, Papua New Guinea can be described as a natural paradise for coffee cultivation.

Western Highlands Coffee Region

Currently, Papua New Guinea coffee is produced in five highland provinces: Western Highlands, Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Morobe, and East Sepik. The Eastern and Western Highlands are major producers of Typica, with small amounts of Catimor and Bourbon varieties also cultivated. Coffee beans from other regions are of lower quality, with most being Robusta varieties.

Western Highlands coffee plantation

The Western Highlands province is the most important and largest coffee-producing province in Papua New Guinea, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,800 meters. The region features an ancient dormant volcano with fertile soil, enabling the cultivation of high-quality coffee. The renowned Sigiri Estate originates from this region.

Sigiri Estate

Sigiri Estate was established in 1950 as a pioneer in the local coffee industry. Its parent company is WR Carpenter Company-PNG, which owns approximately 1,000 hectares of Arabica coffee cultivation area in Papua New Guinea. The company is also the largest producer and exporter of tea and coffee beans in the country, accounting for 80% of the nation's coffee and tea exports, shipping 1.6 million kilograms of high-quality Arabica coffee beans annually.

Sigiri Estate processing facility

The estate is located in the Waghi Valley of the Western Highlands province, situated in high-altitude mountainous areas at 1,500 meters above sea level, featuring volcanic soil rich in minerals, cool climate, and abundant rainfall. For many years, Sigiri Estate has maintained high standards of cultivation and processing systems while emphasizing ecological protection. To protect soil and water sources, it refuses to use pesticides and insecticides. The estate also maintains strict requirements for coffee green beans, with manual harvesting of ripe red cherries that are processed on the same day of collection. Additionally, since 1957, the estate has cultivated special Typica varieties introduced from Jamaica's Blue Mountain region, and uses Papua New Guinea's national bird, the bird of paradise, as its emblem on coffee burlap bags.
