Introduction to Caturra, Catimor, Catuai, Costa Rica 95, and Lempira Varieties
Bourbon is one of the most important Arabica varieties in coffee culture and genetics, renowned for being grown in high-altitude regions and possessing exceptional quality. Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety. The name Caturra originates from the Guaraní language, meaning "small," as Caturra has a single-gene mutation that results in smaller plant growth. With the continuous development of the coffee industry, Caturra has undergone constant transplantation, mutation, and crossbreeding, giving rise to many varieties.
Catimor (T8667)
Catimor is a hybrid between Timor and Caturra, resulting in the first generation F1 hybrid variety group known as Catimor. Designated as T8667, it still requires selection and breeding to determine its characteristics, so Catimor is not a single variety but rather a group of varieties with similar bloodlines. Catimor varieties are characterized by high yield and resistance to leaf rust, and can be grown in lower altitude regions, but are susceptible to the fungal disease Ojo de Gallo (Chicken Eye). Currently, it is cultivated in Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, and China's Yunnan province.
Catuai
Catuai is a hybrid variety between the highly productive Mundo Novo and Caturra. It was developed by the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC) in São Paulo State, Brazil. Catuai features high productivity and compact size, allowing for dense planting, though not as dense as Caturra. Due to these characteristics, Catuai is currently cultivated in coffee-growing countries such as Brazil, Honduras, and Guatemala.
Costa Rica 95 / Lempira / Catisic
These varieties are specific selections from the Catimor variety group, developed through selective breeding of T8667 (the Catimor variety group) in different countries. Costa Rica's CATIE selected and developed Costa Rica 95, characterized by high yield and suitability for cultivation in acidic soils and aluminum-containing soils at low altitudes, though it is susceptible to leaf rust and Ojo de Gallo fungal disease.
Lempira was selected and developed by Honduras' IHCAFE, featuring characteristics similar to Costa Rica 95. Catisic is a variety selected and developed by El Salvador, sharing characteristics with Costa Rica 95 but possessing resistance to coffee leaf rust.
Of course, FrontStreet Coffee also offers Caturra variety coffee, sourced from the Rose Valley coffee beans of the Tree Estate in Colombia's Santander region. FrontStreet Coffee's Rose Valley coffee beans use anaerobic washed processing. When brewed by FrontStreet Coffee using V60 with a 1:15 ratio, they reveal rose floral aromas, with flavors of peach, cranberry, and liquor-filled chocolate, and a smooth mouthfeel.
