Introduction: FrontStreet Coffee's Costa Rican Musician Series

The coffee flavors of FrontStreet Coffee's Costa Rican Musician Series are exceptionally distinctive, featuring both rare purple floral notes and unique spice flavors! Around 2020, the beans used in this series transitioned from traditional Caturra and Catuai to the rarer F1 and H1 varieties.

Beans named with letter-number combinations, like F1 and H1, are most commonly seen in Kenya's SL28 and SL34 varieties. They use the abbreviation SL (for Scott Laboratories) as a prefix, combined with the bean's experimental number! So what exactly do these F1 and H1 designations mean?

F1: A Response to Coffee Leaf Rust Crisis

In 1970, Hemileia vastatrix (the source of leaf rust disease) first swept across the American continent. At that time, coffee cultivation was predominantly Arabica. The genetic uniformity of Arabica meant it lacked resistance to leaf rust disease. Consequently, wherever leaf rust disease—coffee's natural enemy—spread, no Arabica trees survived!

Against this backdrop, to reduce the continuous losses to the coffee industry caused by this disaster, the French Agricultural Research for Development Centre (CIRAD) and the Central American Coffee Organization (ROMECAFE) immediately launched the F1 Project: aimed at cultivating a new generation of coffee varieties! The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) in Costa Rica assisted in execution! They all believed that the coffee varieties widely cultivated in South America had insufficient disease resistance to survive this crisis. Thus, they conceived of using hybridization methods to create new-generation coffee varieties that would possess both excellent flavor and robust vitality!

Coffee research and hybridization process

Unlike ordinary hybrid coffees, F1 requires very careful selection of genetically distant parent varieties to potentially produce F1 varieties with desired characteristics. Therefore, CATIE selected four main varieties from hundreds of coffee types: Caturra, Catuai, Catimor, and Sarchimor, along with some wild varieties, allowing them to cross-pollinate—this was the main content of the F1 Project. In the following five years, the F1 Project produced 100 different F1 varieties, from which they selected 20 outstanding varieties for propagation and cultivation. These first-generation F1 varieties possess extremely strong disease resistance, drought tolerance, and higher yields! Thanks to the efforts of those researchers, by May 2021, there were already 9 precious F1 varieties worldwide, and H1 is one of them.

H1: Centroamericano Hybrid

H1's full name is Centroamericano H1, which is a research result continued by Nicaragua's Sebaco laboratory! H1 is a hybrid between Rume Sudan and Sarchimor T-5296.

Notably, Rume Sudan is an ancient Arabica variety! It was discovered in the Rume Valley of the Boma Plateau in Sudan, hence its name Rume Sudan! Although it has excellent variety characteristics and outstanding flavor, its disease resistance is weak. Therefore, it was hybridized with Sarchimor T-5296 (a hybrid between Villa Sarchi and Catimor), resulting in the H1 variety, which possesses excellent flavor, high adaptability, and extremely strong disease resistance.
